Re: planting now?
thanks for that link swerve and it has good advice/info ... for 'normal' times ... but having lived thro last summer and failed miserably to grow anything (except peppers and tomatoes ... cos they were near our shower water collection point and thus had a regular supply of recycled water) ... and who knows what weather we will get this winter and spring ... (even the farmers round here are saying they dont know what to plant!) ... I was wondering if anyone on A.com had any ideas/thoughts etc ... or is it a matter of 'suck it and see' ?!

Re: planting now?
we haven´t planted anything this year. Our plants we have are surviving, but im not putting any more in until we know we can rely on the water supply. We were told it would be turned off already, but it is still on, and its the second week of september.
none of our plants have any fruit at all this year. Not the peppers, oranges, aubergines, chirymoya, or nispero. We´ll see how it goes as it gets cooler. Our tomato plants died, even tho they had water.

Re: planting now?
thanks for your experience s-l ... it really does all depends on the rain ... according to ventusky weather site, we were supposed to have thunder/lightening and heavy rain for most of yesterday ...all we had was about an hour in the night ... nada mas!!1
Re: planting now?
s_l I share your bitter disappointment ... so many things dying or not fruiting ...despite watering ... we tried things that said they were heat/drought hardy like amaranth, sweetcorn, broad beans, okra ... and altho they had shade and water, they just could not survive temps consistenly above 40 ...

Re: planting now?
It's seems obvious to me that now is the time to plant, cooler and ,hopefully, wetter. But... the Spanish seem to disagree and the garden centres and viveros have only halloween and christmas stuff.
Re: planting now?
cooler yes ...but wetter? ... the latter is the crucial element!
Re: planting now?
Hi was a little late to this thread but just wanted to say that we have learnt to not to wait for weather....as in spring we waited because both years before we had experienced a rain / hail cold spell that killed my newly planted veggies ....so this year we waited and then was too late before the heat....we did however get some sweet potatoes, courgettes pimentos and a few tomatoes...normally get masses of tomatoes but because of late planting and high temps they just wouldn’t flower...
We have planted now some cauliflower broccoli kale and a few lettuce in more sheltered spots....bit risky with late heat but if not we won’t have our winter veg ready.....going to plant more things over next couple of weeks

Re: planting now?
good to hear you have a positive approach to planting ... despite disappointments ... here the temps have dropped but still no sign of rain ... so I cant plant anything more than green beans ...there's a limit to the amount of washing up/shower water I can produce ... and in this area we are sstill forbidden to use mains water for garden/veg etc ... ?whereabouts in Spain are you?
