Source of good fruit trees

Postby geegee » Mon Nov 19, 2007 6:39 pm

Growing on a purchased 2 or 3 year old fruit tree is always tricky, even when following all the expert planting and care guidance. I and clearly lots of others out there are experiencing problems. OK, we may not be experts, especially gardening in this climate, but I find getting hold of good healthy stock a real problem. I have not been impressed with the quality or performance of trees I bought from viveros near me (Soria in Antequera, large garden centre in Loja).

I long wistfully for the equivelent of the RHS Wisley garden centre where you know the stock is top quality, you receive expert advice and have a good choice of grafting stock and fruit varieties to suit your particular conditions. Without good stock you are onto a loser from the start, and given we lavish so much time and attention on the blighters only to have them die on us, I would gladly pay twice the price for good trees.

Does anyone have any specialist suppliers they know of or could recommend anywhere in Andalucia or even further?

Geegee.

I wanted a good peach tree and asked one of my neighbours to recommend a supplier he suggested Viveros Canerias (think thats the name) at Velez Malaga. Have to say I have been very pleased with it, heavy fruiter and the peaches are really something.

The same place was also recommended to a friend and he is also very happy with the trees he bought there.

Viveros Guzman in Alhaurin de la torre is rated as one of the best viveros in Europe

Silver and Mhic, thats really great to know, maybe the viveros by me are just not very good! Both Alhaurin and Velez Malaga have a much more balmy climate than me, the only thing I would then worry about is whether the trees down on the coast would be too mollycoddled to cope with my climate but I can but try!! Thanks guys I will check them out next time I am that way.

Silver, where exactly in Alhaurin is Guzmans? I have passed through once or twice but failed to find it.

Fruit trees

I am not very keen on Viveros Guzman. I have bought a few orange/lemon trees and none of them are doing well. I have also bought quite a few plants from them and again, they are not doing well. But when I've bought plants and trees from a very small garden centre in Churriana, they are all doing well.
