Spanish Elm

Postby telboy » Tue Jun 03, 2008 11:29 am

We live in the campo 40km north of Loja our house backs onto an arroyo with many trees on the banks including Silver Birch, Spanish Oak and Spanish Elm, unfortunately some of the Elm trees which are in abundance are dying. What could be Killing them, are they affected by Dutch Elm desease?

If it is Dutch Elm disease you will find evidence of it under the bark. They eat away at the layer between the bark and the wood. The trees die off fairly slowly from the growing tips downward. If you scroll down the link below you will see a typical pattern that the beetle makes under the bark.

Yes, you are right the Spanish name for Elm is (Olmo) apparently Dutch Elm bug took its hold up here about 4 years ago says the local farmer.

All the leaf growth on the Elm trees are falling, its wierd its just like Autumn.
