I need a climber that isn't thirsty

Postby teralin » Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:51 am

Can anyone recommend a climbing plant that doesn't need much water. I want to grow something that will cover my neighbour's ugly concrete deposito that he built right on my entrance. Ideally, I want something evergreen but would like some colourful flowers occasionally. The important thing is that it doesn't need much water because my well isn't exactly gushing.

Teralin, our jasmin hardly ever gets watered now- it is fully established and is growing fast! We have it on two sides of the garden, one flowers early on (like now) and the other later in the year.

Do you know what type of jasmine it is and does it lose it's leaves in winter? I love jasmine, the perfume is really lovely on those long hot summer evenings.

Sorry Teralin, I have no idea as to the type of jasmin it is, just a bog standard creamy white one I think! It stays green all winter, even the frost this winter hasn´t taken the leaves off. Last year it was really smothered in flowers, this spring it isn´t so covered :( I guess I can´t expect a show of flowers like last year every year.

We bouhgt a solandra last year. Has great big leathery leaves and huge gold flowers on it. I have never seen anything grow so fast! It covered the fence in no time. Unfortunately our one night of frost made it drop its leaves this year but it is shooting like mad again now.
The other good and faithful climber is honeysuckle which is also a fast grower.

The Pink Trumpet Vine is another fast grower. It stays evergreen unless the site is very windy. It's not a creeper as such so needs some support but it can easily cover a large deposito.

I bought a Solandra Grande flora a month ago (5 mtres tall, you should have seen it wrapped around the car),last week the bottom 2mts of leaves started turning yellow. Top half looks healthy and is growing.
Am I over/underwatering it? The earth is quite damp there, as it's against a retaining wall.
Should I feed it with something?

Another question. I have a new potted rose, 'Paul's Scarlet' and don't know if I can put it where I want.
Would it survive being in shade 6 months of the year? ( I have googled, some say full sun, some partial shade) Guessing it's a no, so, what else can I put there?

On re-reading, no rude answers please

I think the yellow leaves are probably just a reaction to being moved. Mine is as tough as old boots, gets hardly any water and just grows and grows. You will have a job to kill it! We lost all the leaves in the frost but it is shooting off like mad now. We just lost the tips of it.
It grows so fast and takes over a whole fence in no time.
I think the rose would prefer sun but I am not a rose expert.

Thanx for that Murbisa, I live in hope.
I managed to kill a 20 year old Chyrimoya tree (didn't water it last summer), felt as guilty as sin cutting it up for firewood :(
I still need a rambler for a shady area, any ideas?

I think if you want to cover a back fence permanently then a jasmine or a honeysuckle might be better. They are pretty tough and need little water when established. The honeysuckle will cover the fence in no time.
