what could this tree be?

Postby princess peach » Sat May 08, 2010 9:30 am

I went into Gib yesterday, behind main street there were about 5 trees all in full bloom, from a distance they look like cherry trees, when i got closer, they were absolutley georgous.

Pale pink and dark pink flowers, very delicate and pretty...orchid looking....large round shaped trees about 20ft plus tall..anyone know what they could be?

We have some in full bloom in Alhaurin de la Torre as well, PP - a small avenue of them.
Up close they are quite stunning. I have often wondered what they are - they look as though they could be a member of the rhododendron or azalea family. Rhododendrons can be found in tree form not just shrubs. The orchid like flowers are very similar and this species does bloom at this time of year.

I wonder if they are the ornamental cherry trees. Much prettier and more flowers than the fruiting type. Or are the flowers bigger - could be a magnolia?

Magnolias big flowers, cherries smaller flowers in big clusters.
Easy to tell apart.

Sounds like the tree known in Canada as a Flowering Crab (crab apple)

JAWG I think you could be right. My sister has one in her garden in Devon in full bloom at the moment and it looks stunning. It is the ornamental one, not the fruiting one.

Hi Peachy,
When you get some time to spare.......... 8)

http://www.gonhs.org/YearofTree.htm

Have a look on Google Earth .....there are some photos of trees in flower in Gibraltar.
Or you could post the street name and we could have a look. If its Maine Street would need the location.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

PP, the ones here in Alhaurin look like the Hong Kong Orchid tree - do yours look the same ?
Apparently it blooms from Feb to Nov, easy to grow tropical tree.
Some of the pictures I googled don't look quite right when looking close up but when I find a full picture of the tree in full bloom, then it is very close to ones I am looking at.
They come mainly in pink, but purples and whites also.
If it is that one, I think I might try to track one down for our garden because it is a gorgeous tree.
It is not related to the orchid but looks like one. I haven't seen them anywhere else before. Our town civic gardeners put them in a year ago but this is the first time they have flowered.

My wife thinks it may be a Coral Tree, she says she saw one just the other day at El Ingenio Garden Centre at Velez Malaga, however is it not for sale but is part of the display in Gardens of the Word area, at the moment it is in full bloom.
