Postby Kamila » Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:57 pm

Can anyone ID this bug and does anybody know if it is a friend or foe to lemon & orange blossoms / fruit?

Thanks!

It's a White-spotted Rose Beetle (Oxythyrea funesta)

Can be a pest in certain plants but it's probably doing a good job pollinating your citrus.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will leave them on the blossoms.

I am far from an expert, but, I think this insect eats the middle of the blossom of orange, lemon, quince, daisies, yellow roses and it seems any flower with a yellow middle. ( Therefore killing the flower and future fruit )
I take them off by hand and squash them. I have found no insecticide to kill them despite trying many.

Thank you baroness, I have been knocking them of the flowers but left them lately. When the bug is on the flower it looks like it is buried inside the flower so you are right, it has to be eating the inside of the flower. So back to knocking them off and squashing them.
