Insects on Mango tree

Postby Campo Steve » Sat May 21, 2011 3:48 pm

Noticed today some insects on our mango tree.

At first sight I thought they were ladybirds but, looked at from above, they are more of an oval shape than the round shape I would expect of a ladybird. They are also larger and, looked at from the side, flatter.

What could they be and should I be concerned about them as far as getting a mango crop this year is concerned?

Hi,
No positive ID ........wildside will know :?:

Take one off and watch it on the ground if it runs around fast then its a goody, if its slow take it out and remove the others.
My first reaction on its shape its not up to any good.

Unfortunately they fly away as soon as you try to catch them or put them down. Don't seem to like running around.

Hi,
Not really round enough for a Ladybird.......also if it was ladybird there would be black/green fly on tree and it would feed on them.

Guess you will have to fan the tree so they fly away.............. 8)

Ok there is this one............but feeds on aphids............don't see any on your tree.....

Whatever it is, it's a gardener's friend. Leave it alone.

Sure looks like what we call a ladybug.

Hi,

This is a kind of leaf beetle (Lachnaia vicina) and not a ladybird....

Have a google image search to see if you agree.....

Thanks Wildside, that's the very thing.

24 hours later they had all gone. Maybe they had found different plants more to their liking.

No sign of any eggs or leaf discolouring and Mangos forming so looks like no harm done. That's assuming this species of Leaf Beetle would have done any harm. If they harmful, any suggestions as to how to discourage them should they return?
