Diseased grapes?

Postby gerryh » Tue Jun 30, 2020 9:57 am

Some of my grapes have a greenish-yellow coating on them. Rubs off easily.
Is it some form of disease and should I treat it in some way?

Sounds like some type of mildew, either downy or powdery mildew. Any sign of any yellowing or mildew on the leaves?
It's a fungal disease, not sure if you can get any chemical to treat it, (if you use them). Think all you can really do, is prune branches to make the vine more open and keep the area round the vines tidy, getting rid of any fallen leaves, etc. Might be worth mulching round the vines, as they may be stressed due to drought.

Hi Gerry
Thanks for the reply.
No sign of yellowing or mildew on the leaves.
I'll remove the infected bunches.
I only have one vine and usually make about 18-24 bottles of red wine from the grapes.
This year the grapes are rather small so probably won't be any winemaking this year.
I'm going to give the vine a severe pruning next year as it is getting large and untidy.
Cheers

Wow that's a lot of wine from one vine. I don't get that much from 20 vines. I prune mine hard back very winter. Do you?
What's the wine like ? I only make grape juice.

I've been told that it is very nice.
I prune it back in Jan/ Feb. Usually, only the new growth gets pruned.
I intend pruning it back a lot more next time.
It's getting a bit too big. Couldn't stand far enough back to get the whole vine in the picture.

Wow, that is very impressive. I prune most of my vines hard back in Feb. A couple I don't touch, as they are on a steep slope and difficult to get to.
