Postby marchamona » Mon Jan 21, 2008 11:47 am

I am trying to write the word -Rose- as in pink wine. Cannot work out how to get an accent(Grave/Acute) over the e. Put quotation mark but it doesn't look right. Can anyone advise please?[/i]

Are you on English or Spanish keyboard?

If Spanish - the accent shares a key with quotation marks and opening bracket.- next to ñ. You need to press the accent key before you press the letter that you want it to be above. When you press the accent key nothing will show - but it will appear when you press the letter key. I hope that makes sense.

If an English keyboard - sorry, I cannot help.

Here's a way to deal with dual languages for XP users.

Go to Control Panel/Regional Languages Options.
Click on Language tab, then on Details bar.
It will list your default input language. Mine is English.
Beside the box below. click on Add.
I chose Spanish (International Sort).
Click OK. The second language should be in Installed services box.
Then, click on Key Settings.
In the Action box it will show how to switch between input languages.
Mine is Left Alt + Shift.
Click OK to close everything.

Now, when I hit Left Alt + Shift, my keyboard becomes Spanish.
Repeat, and it pops back to English.

I then googled "Spanish keyboard", found a picture of the layout and printed it out.
When I need an ñ or ¿, I just hit Left Alt + Shift, check my Spanish keyboard cheat sheet and type it.
Left Alt + Shift again and I'm back to English.

As they say, Robert's your mother's brother. 8)

beagle, it did not work on mine :cry:

did everything as instructed but when I tried to type it said

The list of CommonSpanish (Spain-Modern Sort) Autocorrection is not available. this current feature is not installed.

I said yes to it being installed but after trying it said I neded 'Windows Professional with Front Page' disc.

I did install some of the features on this disc ages ago as I only had XP so must have missed this one out.

Strange though because when i carried on typing it did give me some of the Spanish keyboard features but then the message came up again?

Nothing is ever straighforward with me and computers I'm afraid :cry:

Hi Concorde
Did a quick check and autocorrection does not come up.
Are you on XP Home? And are you using an OS bought in UK or Spain?
I'm off work tomorrow and will see what I can find.

Hi Beagle,
I think I know what the problem is, I only have Windows XP Home, and then because it didn´t have Publisher I acquired the XP Professional cd but only loaded so much into my computer and have obviously missed this bit out so when I type in a word document the error comes up. That doesn't happen if I type with the Spanish keyboard on here!

I will see if I can find the disc and just load the missing bit into my computer. It is an English system.

By the way , as a self-confessed computer geek, do you think I should download Explorer 7 or stick to 6? I have heard some aren't too impressed by this. I know I can always roll back to 6 if not happy.

Hi Concorde... sounds like you've figured out your problem. Good luck on finding the CD and installing what's needed.

As for the browser, I use a shell called Maxathon which 'fits over' IE and allows easy tabbing and right-mouse actions to move around and close pages. I upgraded to IE7 and occasionally use it. I haven't had problems, but it doesn't come up to what I have with the shell. As for you, I would say, install IE7 and take for a test run. As mentioned, you can always go back to IE6. That being said, I hope you have anti-virus and a firewall installed to protect yourself from outside problems that IE browers continually face.

Hi Marchamona
The following are the ones that I use most: -
á = ALT+160
í = ALT+161
é = ALT+130
ñ = ALT+164
¿ = ALT+168
ó = ALT+162

An excellent, and free, utility for accents, special characters etc is allchars available at:-

http://allchars.zwolnet.com

To use it you prees the Ctrl key followed by 2 characters that make up the special character e.g
Ctrl ? ? gives ¿
Ctrl 1 4 gives ¼

and a huge range of other special characters.

Cheers
