Wher is the half symbol?

Postby concorde » Tue May 27, 2008 9:56 pm

Yes, I know this is probably a dumb question but where is the half symbol in my computer?

I regularly send or copy recipes but end up having to put 0.5 teaspoon or 1/2 tsp, the latter could be misread as 1-2, not funny when it could be chilli powder.

I have looked through all the various symbols listed and there seems to be every symbol in every script/language but not the half sign.

Come on someone put me out of my misery

If you are using word then it will be found if you go to 'insert' then 'symbol' and it is in the normal text, basic latin.

Depends what version of word you have. I have word 2007 however here is a link which might help.

Many thanks for that, I have Works and have been trawling through all the various symbols, never thought to look at the special character tab

Plus, thanks to your link I have found allsorts of fascinating stuff, which is just as well as I'm having one of my insomniac nights, 3.55a.m. and the dawn chorus is just starting.

I use a small utility called allchars from http://allchars.zwolnet.com/

This just sits in the background waiting to be used. To use it you press the Ctrl key then the keys that make up the character eg
key presses Ctrl 1 2 give ½
key presses Ctrl L - give £
key presses Ctrl ? ? give ¿
If you don't have a Spanish keyboard you can use it for all Spanish accented letters.
NB you just press one key at a time, not 3 keys togother.
It is a very easy to use and free utility.

Cheers

Looks good Gerry, but looking at programme it says it works on Vista(partly)

Haven't downloaded it yet so don't know which part it means

Hi concorde, when I am using Microsoft Word I just type the number one then a forward slant followed by a number two and it automatically turns it into this ½ , you could try typing any text in Word then copying and pasting the text into Posts etc, Chris.

Alt 171 works for me. Hold the alt key down while you type, has to be the key pad numbers though, not the ones above the qwerty.

Thank you Chris, now I've tried that on my machine I have discovered it works for ¼ & ¾ as well!

This will be faster than using Character Map!

Thank you.
