No.
When I got a payg simcard earlier in the year it's a requirement to register, name address details etc.and back up with id.
Girl in shop said it was a counter terrorism thing as terrs use payg phones.
I expect someone will elaborate later, but you're not being wound up.

Hi Ken2,
I thought it was for pay and go, and you have until November 2009 to register.
Keep getting txt messages from Vodofone regarding this.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

If the the PAYG SIM card was bought in the last 2 years it will already be registered. If not you must do it by November or it will be deactivated.

Contract phones are OK - they are automatically registered.

You can do it at any sales point for your supplier - you just need the SIM card and your ID.

Its a good idea for sims being registered. In Ireland anyone can buy sims without ID. So criminals buy lots of them and change every few days....... much harder for police to track and monitor. I did point this out to the telefonica guy in La canada when I gave him my passport. He had never thought about a terrorist buying a sim in UK or Ireland and using it in spain

Why would he think of that, no terrorists in Ireland or UK, only soldiers of destiny......

So the terrorists will dutifully give their name and address in order to obtain a sim card! Yeah, right.

It's nothing to do with terrorism. Just a way of enabling Rodríguez the Cobbler's thought police to keep a track on us all.

And of course terrorists and criminals couldn't possibly obtain bogus ID's, passports, addresses to register phones with.
It's all a load of bull, not that I care as I have nothing to hide, but it's only the straight law abiding people that will be on the big brother register.

Well, this has the ring of truth to it.
If they know where the phone is, they know where you are.
When I lived in the US there was a resistance to getting your dog chipped on the basis that if THEY knew where Fido was they knew where you were.

Nimrod, I meant that here, wherever Fido is doesn't mean his owner will be in the same place, maybe not even in the same country

It's not so much that but using prevention of terrorism as an excuse is ridiculous as it will prevent no such thing.

"It's nothing to do with terrorism. Just a way of enabling Rodríguez the Cobbler's thought police to keep a track on us all.".....if you really think that they will be sitting in madrid watching on screen wherev you are and what phone calls you are making I think you are a bit paranoid.
