Movistar sim

Postby toddcl » Fri Sep 11, 2009 3:20 pm

Iv'e had a movistar sim for about 3 years now. I put 30€ on it just before returning to UK a month ago. Now it's dead as a nail. Found out since that due to fighting terorists etc. if you dont use you phone, then Movistar 'may cancel your sim'.
Anyone had this problem? Where do I call to get my 30€ back or a new sim?

Hi,You have to register your movistar sim at a shop before the beginning of Nov.So that wouldnt be the reason for your phone not working.as you still have a while to sort that out.
Have you checked the balance or will it not let you do that?
I would go into a movistar shop and speak to them. You shouldnt have been cut off if its only been a month since you last topped it up with 30E. :?

MMMM. Found this on a movistar website. Says Nov 2008.
WARNING!!! DUE TO SPANISH ANTI-TERRORISM LAWS PASSED IN NOVEMBER 2007 TO AVOID UNLAWFUL USE OF SIM CARDS IN TERRORIST ATTACKS, THE SPANISH CELL COMPANIES ARE REQUIRING THAT ALL SIM CARDS BE CORRECLTY REGISTERED BY NOVEMBER 1st, 2008. THOSE SIM CARDS NOT REGISTERED WILL BE DEACTIVATED AND IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THEM REACTIVATED.

FURTHERMORE, THE SPANISH CELL COMPANIES HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO DEACTIVATE SIM CARDS THAT DO NOT SHOW ACTIVITY (USAGE) OVER THE COURSE OF AS LITTLE AS 2 MONTHS SO PLEASE BE SURE TO TOP-UP YOUR SIM CARD OR AT LEAST MAKE A PHONE CALL WITH IT AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH TO BE SURE NOT TO LOSE YOUR PHONE NUMBER FOREVER.

I recieved a text message from movistar 2 days ago telling me to go register my sim before next month, which I registered over a year ago, anyway I did it again, they sent me a text to confirm, normally they close the sim if not used for 6 months, so maybe worth getting someone here in Spain to contact them for you.

Well i went into a movistar shop on Friday to register mine..I was told to come back in the evening.Due to high volumes of people registering the mobiles,it couldnt be done until then!!!
Personally i dont think he could be bothered. The shop was really busy with people buying phones...I wasnt too happy.

We registered ours in Eroski at the Movistar desk. Went smoothly and quickly.

This registration of Mobile Phones business is quite strange.
Presumably it is to identify the user of a phone. But there it relies upon the young girl at the 'outlet' collecting the correct data from the user and also correctly inputting this data into the 'system'. Even then it is not at all certain whether the owner of the phone will be able to keep it safe at all times. there must be times when a phone goes 'missing' and the owner does not report it or does nothing about it. Just gets a new phone. And if it is to stop people setting off bombs using a mobile phone, I would assume that a determined terrorist would use a phone that is working freely and not one that is registered in Spain. After all, I presume that you could buy a mobile phone in most countries and use the roaming service.

So I am just wondering what the registering thing is all about ? Or is it something to do with 'Big Brother' and the State?

Can anyone explain what all this is all about ?

If a phone is lost, presumably you can de-register it then it will be cut off?

Guys this is not a bad thing .Leaving acts of terrorism aside it will aid the police when a mobile is used in a crime. Drug runners etc etc all use payg sims. So get used to it and register your phone.
