Watching BBC iPlayer in Spain

Postby SpanishBlue » Thu Oct 08, 2009 1:08 pm

When I accidentally hijacked another thread (Sorry about that  ), It was suggested that it is possible to view the BBC iPlayer outside the UK.

Would someone please be kind enough to explain how this can be achieved.

Two choices really. VPN or uk based proxy.

I know Mark (I think it was Mark?!) commented on this in the other thread so I'll let him answer properly.

I've tried using a UK proxy before. It is always so slow & unreliable, making viewing almost impossible. :(

What is VPN?

Virtual Private Network.

In layman's terms a private link over the internet to another PC(s).

I do use a proxy server, and for me it works quite well ,you just have to be patient and trial and error with the proxy and you need to change it quite regularly.but once it's going it's fine

In IE go to tools/internet options/press the conections tab/click the LAN settings button/ tick the use proxy server for your LAN....you then need to enter a UK proxy. I use http://www.samair.ru/proxy/ip-address-01.htm
to get mine. Cick on the country link about half way down the page the next page has list of countries click United Kingdom and there they are.

Remember to be patient because the page can be slow to load and don't forget to untick The "use proxy server for your LAN" box once you've finished watching otherwise you internet can run slow one other thing from time to time you will need to change the proxy server

Another way is using foxy proxy which for some reason doesn't work any more on my PC.Follow the instructions on this link

iPlayer aside for a second this will allow you to watch a selection* of UK based channels regardless of which country you are in - http://www.myp2pforum.eu/live-tv/41045-british-tv.html

I can confirm from personal experience that it works in Spain.

After using this for a while I have to say this program is very good . It is a good alternative when the sat signal is lost through rain

Yes! Another program I can't get to work. I followed the very simple instructions and nada.
When I double click British TV, I get a small screen that looks like the DOS prompt. It then disappears after 2 seconds.
FilmOn still works though.

"Yes! Another program I can't get to work."
It´s got to be you, Mowser, no doubt about it!!! ;-)
Works perfect here, no problems.
Have you got VLC?

Yes Frank. I have VLC. I also have the programme downloaded, but nada. At least my quote button is working.

Yes, but be honest, given the choice of 44 channels or a quote button, which would you opt for? ;-)
You'd probably only use half a dozen of them anyway. It does look like a dos prompt, but after a few seconds mine comes up with a list of available channels, and you just enter the number.

I really reckon VLC - I've had it as my default media player for ages - no bloated Windows Media Player for me!
VLC + ffdshow codec pack will let you play pretty nearly ALL video & music formats - no problem!

Yes, I've had it for some time as well, impressive.
Gave a Spanish friend the link, and he has just come back to me, so it works well in Asturias!
Frank, esto es fantástico. Creo que casi todos los canales funcionan. Muchas gracias.

OK guys. What am I doing wrong? Is there a secret password? Do I have to muck about with any settings? ¡Ayudame por favor!

Where have you installed VLC media player?
In the instructions for the TV set up program it does emphasise that VLC should be installed in the default location (usually C/Program files). (Look for the folder "VideoLan"). I guess that this is where the TV program is set to "look" for the player.

I just let it install where it wanted to, but reading the forum, some that have failed because they put it in a different folder. Could be Mowser's problem.

Hi Mowser,
Please read the instructions :?

And I thought you were doing so well in computer class :(
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
