El Ministerio del Interior ha cedido a las presiones de los operadores móviles y ha concedido un plazo de seis meses para que los clientes cuyas tarjetas de móvil prepago queden anuladas el lunes puedan identificarse y recuperen así su número de teléfono

Did 2 x Orange phones today, took about 2 minutes.

Only required my passport and half my address, no need to sign anything

The Department of the Interior has yielded to the pressures of the movable operators and has granted a term of six months so that the clients whose cards of movable pre-payment are annulled Monday can identify themselves and reclaim thus their telephone number

Translated this using babelfish. Can anybody advise as to wether you will still retain your credit on your payg as we have money on ours but will not be in spain till january 2010

A UK mobile works in Spain and roaming charges are lower these days. Why bother trying to understand these bizarre rules in Spain if you are a low user and only want the phone for emergencies or occasional calls and texts.

OH and I both have Spanish mobiles but I also have a UK one for when we go elsewhere.

I am a low user but only reason I don't use the UK one all the time over here is that the only people that are likely to phone me are in Spain. By using my UK phone they would have to pay for an international call. I would also have to pay to receive the calls as I would be on roaming.

BTW friends of ours over here on holiday went to register their phones this week. Don't know which network they are with but they were told the deadline for registering had been extended.

I registered my mobile (orange) a couple of months ago and got a receipt but on Monday I got a message on the phone saying "Your registration failed". The phone is still working however so was it a mistake or should I try to register it again? Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I was under the impression that any phone that hadn't been registered would have been disconnected on Monday with a period of six months in which to recuperate the number. However, it seems that some people who thought they had registered have been cut off and others who haven't still have a working telephone so who knows?

Isn't this typical of the chaotic state of this country? They can't even get a simple thing like this right.

But are you convinced it would go to plan in UK?

Not really, I suppose.

It wouldn't be so bad if there was some good reason but if a terrorist wants to use a mobile phone to remotely detonate an explosive device in Spain he will just use a PAYG from a country where registration is not required.

Absolutely. I no longer use my Spanish mobile to send texts to the UK, instead I use my UK mobile. Since last July Orange Spain charge 60c plus IVA per text message to the UK whereas with Orange UK under their roaming charges a text costs 10p VAT included. Shows how much profit there is in this!

There are problems for people who have registered in time - but their phones were still cut off.

This happened to me.

You need to go back to your phone provider and re-register - you can still claim your phone number and any credit on your phone will still be there.

These little things are sent to try us .....

I feel fairly confident that when the 6 months extension is up the entire registration thing will be scrapped. In the meantime it all makes work for people and adds to the existing confusion. :?
