TDT Boxes - Are they all the same?

Postby SpanishBlue » Fri Jan 01, 2010 10:27 pm

I want to buy a TDT box shortly, as Spanish terrestrial analogue TV will be turned off soon in my area.

My question is, are the boxes all basically the same in terms of the main features?

Do they all have an EPG, subtitles, teletext and dual audio?

Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy one of the mini TDT boxes for just €25?

Both of mine were less than 25 euro each and work fine.

With advertisements gone from TVE channels, I may watch them more often. I also have a TDT Digi box or "Free View" box purchased in UK and it works fine when switched to the English option (not Welsh !) I do get English audio on some channels. But have never experienced any English audio on TVE. Am I correct in thinking that TVE only broadcasts in Spanish even if an original English language film is shown ?

Our TDT is built in in the TV it appears that anything can be played in the original language that it was made, we did have the option set to play all the programmes in original language where possible but, son 10, daughter 18 prefer somethings in Spanish so f I want to watch something in English I have to mannually change it now. We have 24 channels

TVE can be changed to OL too.
When buying a TDT receiver, look out for one that has a USB port so that you can record to a USB drive , pause live TV and playback DIVX movies and photos etc easily on you TV

Mark -when you talk about a TDT receiver do you mean a standalone box or one that is built into the TV itself ? It really interests me about recording TV as I currently use my PC to record some films/programmes direct from the TV aerial coaxial cable into my USB via the Hauppauge WIN TV unit. OK it is a bit silly to do it this way, but it works fine for me. Programmes are recorded as a .ts file and could be played back or stored.

I am especially interested to hear that you can use the USB port to record direct ? Can you explain a little more for the sake of a fairly 'green' technophobe ?

Also do you happen to know what kind of programmes are shown on TVE in English - are they limited to films ?

As far as I know all TVE programmes have the option to watch in the ov
This isn't resticted to TDT, It's the same with Stereo anologue TV as well (although this depends on which part of Spain you live, as not all parts of Spain have it)

The USB TDT boxes are many and available in lots of places
Have a look at this one at PC CITY

Went back to UK for Christmas. On my return Spannish TV no longer working, I live in Marbella and can only assume we have gone 'digital' can anyone tell me - if I purchase a Spanish digital box will I need to have work done on the outside aerial?
Sorry if a dumb question but a 'blonde'

You'll need to buy a TDT reciever to convert your TV to digital. As for the the ariel, buy the reciever and if you get a signal, do nothing more, if not you'll need to pay somebody to realign it

Hi there - a bit confused.

If you have a Spanish dish which you can connect a TDT box to - can you connect an English one to it or will it only work if you have access to a larger dish of 1.3m or more ?

I think you really are confused. The TDT boxes being talked about here connect to a TV aerial, not a dish.

Nicola

We had the same thoughts. Two weeks ago we bought a phillips box from the myriad of different makes on the shelf for the highly scientific reason that we have a phillips tv. We were completely clueless at that stage, any way took it home plugged it in to the sockets and 10 mins later our 6 fuzzy analogue channels were gone and we had 25 tv and 15 radio channels including all the main spanish ones! May have just been lucky, but seemed amazingly straightforward. I'd just go for it if I were you - wish I'd done it ages ago!

I am - but not all my fault.
I was told we had connection to a dish - but the message on the screen is all about TDT - curiouser & couriser ....

"La programation de Cuatro ha dejado de emitirse por este canal. Puede seguir visualizando Cuatro en TDT. Mas information 901 2010 04"

Or via babelfish

"Programation of Four has stopped emitting itself by this channel. It can continue visualizing Four in TDT"

Simples ..... :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

The easiest way to tell if you are connected to a dish or an aerial is to have a look at the plug on the end of the lead. :D :D
If it can be pulled out and pushed in then you are connected to an aerial.
If you have to screw it in or out then you are connected to a dish.

In that case I would say that we are connected to an aerial - which would make it Spanish TV only - via a TDT box I guess ?

I think you´ve just found your problem, the tdt box should be sitting by your tv, if there isn´t one inside your house you havn´t got one !

Unless the TV has digital built in, but it seems like it isn't.
