Slow Downloads
My download speed has dropped dramaticaly these last 3 days, from an average 500+ Kbps to about 30Kbps.
Is anyone else having same prob?
I am with Jaztell and have been for over a yr, so dont think it is anything to do with being capped as I am a heavy user and have been for a while, never had aany notification off them about capping, so assume it is something else wrong..
Done all the usual stuff, unplugging routers etc, nothing.
Last resort tried to phone them today, all i get is an automated voice which i do not understand what they are saying, my spanish is still very limited.
Anyone any ideas or suggestions????

Re: Slow Downloads
Have you tried http://www.speedtest.net to check your speeds?
This was mine a few seconds ago.
Later today (Saturday) I will be lucky if I get 2 or 3 MB (I pay for up to 10MB, so the result is very good - temporarily.
If I got this all the time I would be very happy!

Re: Slow Downloads
My speed wasn't too bad, but I also did the "ping" test and got the following results:-
Ping:549ms
Jitter133ms
Line quality F - very poor, real time internet application performance will suffer greatly in such a connection.
any comments - or any advice on how to improve?

Re: Slow Downloads
Hi,
I try and give you all some info so pick out the bits that might apply to your situation.
If you could post more info that would be helpful. What type of connection from your ISP i.e. Wire (ADSL) , cable or Wireless.
What is your contracted speed, most will say "upto" these days.
If you getting 500+kbps I would expect the connection to only be 1mb, normally would expect to get 75% of the contracted speed to be happy
Do your tests at different times of the day in case things are very busy on the Exchange/lines.
From Janda's ping test ..might indicate a line problem, another way to check things out.......
In XP
Start -> Run -> cmd then type in ping www.google.co.uk and see if you get any packet loss

Re: Slow Downloads
Hi Janda,
I take it you're Telefonica ADSL and then connecting wireless from your Laptop/PC to the router.
In that case I would expect some possible speed drop due to the wireless environment in your house.
Try ping -t 208.69.34.231 or .230
Ctrl C to stop after a short while.........i.e. 20 seconds

Re: Slow Downloads
My Speedtest shown above WAS via laptop to router, wirelessly!
Surprisingly for a Saturday, the speed is still good, tested a few moments ago.
I reckon the O.P. has line problems with those results?

Re: Slow Downloads
Hi PMF, ping test ok 0% loss and average time of 566ms - which was about the same as I got before. Having said that not too much of a problem with downloads - unless I'm trying to down load a mega large file!!!! Thanks

Re: Slow Downloads
I have an adsl connection with a Telefonica line and Jazztell Internet.
Supposed to be 7Mb, which is a joke anyway.
Most times i pull films down at 700Kb/s, so what does that tell you.
Op system is Win7 on comps and Vista on lappy, same results on all 3 machines.
Just tested it again and got :....
0.44 Mbs Download
0.21 Mbs Upload
Ping 133ms
Dont have run on here so cant ping test.

Re: Slow Downloads
Can I ask what programs you are using to download and is it films etc..if so and you are getting those speeds (500kbs) I want to move. I am using Vuze and very rarely get speeds over 100kbs.

Re: Slow Downloads
µTorrent works well for me, using mostly BTJunkie.
An average time for an episode of say, NCIS, is from 35 minutes to an hour or so. It's a 349 MB file, as all the ads. are stripped out! (1hour 9 minutes for The Mentalist, (349 MB), just this minute finished)
On occasion I have obtained a feature length film in under an hour, but that is (a) depending on the number of seeders and (b) my own download speed.
Avatar, for instance - a big file at 1.5 MB took, IIRC, about five or six hours over a period of a couple of days.

You do have run in vista and Win7.
Type run in the search box (bottom left of main window after hitting the window symbol), hit enter run appears in the list. Hit that and it opens the old WinXP type run box.
You can then enter cmd to get to the old DOS style window and use ping from there. Its better because trying ping from the run window sometimes does not give you time to see the results before the window closes.
Do not forget to try pinging sites close by and the other side of the world. You will get 2 very different times.
I am sure you already knew that though

Due to the high cost of energy, the light at the end of the tunnel will be shut off until further notice.
Re: Slow Downloads
I'm contracted with BT Arrakis for 3Mb. Download is normally around 2.6Mb.
For faster downloads I use DAP (Download Accelerator Plus) and it's free. Get it on

Re: Slow Downloads
Tried pinging and getting average of 100ms.
Now it is getting beyond the joke, cant get hold of anyone on the phone at Jazztell, so much for English support.
Tried their website for email addy that keeps getting returned.
Looks like i am gonna switch provider but cannot afford to be off line for any period of transition, got caught out once before by Jazztell who told me a pack of lies, was off the net for a week, supposed to have been one day.

Re: Slow Downloads
I moaned a few years back about my slow speed. I had stupidly reversed the cables in the splitter.
