Transfering photos from camera to computer

Postby SpanishBlue » Thu Jun 24, 2010 8:59 pm

Normally when transferring photos from my camera, I just connect my camera to the PC via a USB socket and the Microsoft wizard appears.

Now however, although I know the camera is connected, as it starts charging, no wizard appears.

Any idea how I can get the wizard to appear?

Take the cable out and try another usb port on the PC. Does it work then?

mmmm Microsoft Wizard..... casts a spell ?
Do you have a SD card ?

I don't use a cable - used to -but found another wire a nuisance. Have a small SD Reader. So take the card out of the camera and put in the small USB SD card reader then plug into PC. It recognises another drive. Then just copy the content over to the file you want. or onto Desktop for further work.
This is an example of one:

No, it doesn't show up on My Computer, even though a light comes on the camera end of the lead to show that it is connected and charging.

flan_taster - I don't have a USB card reader, but I might buy one if I can't find a solution.

The silly thing is, until yesterday, the wizard would nearly always start up upon connection. On the rare times it didn't, it would on the 2nd attempt.

There must be a way of forcing the wizard to appear - but how? :wtf:

A USB cable contains 4 wires - 2 for power and 2 for the USB signals. It's possible that one of the data wires has broken in the cable. Try swapping for another USB cable. If that doesn't fix it, then it sounds like the problem's inside the camera.

Have you tried reinstalling the camera software?

If your camera is not showing as a "device", then it maybe the usb cable, or the camera. You should be able to start the programme itself by going into Program Files, but just in case there is a problem with the programme, try some different software. Try this, http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
I would always advise a card reader, the connection in the camera itself is quite delicate and easy to damage when connecting and disconnecting. I'm not saying that is what you have done, but many have! By removing the memory card, the worst that can happen is damage to the card or the reader, not desirable nor likely, but better than knackering the camera. I shoot thousands of photos and have never had a problem with a card reader, yet! I think your fist problem is to get it to register as a device though if you want to use the usb cable route.

This isn't really much help, I'm afraid, but I have also had this problem with the Wizard not starting on my old computer - I'm trying to remember how I got around it

I do know that when we got the new computer the Wizard re-appeared, so it hadn't been a problem with either the cable or the camera :eh:

If I can remember what I did, I will post again

Edit - OK I just remembered - software that came with the camera included Photobase which had an Album program and I used that to import images :D

But his is not showing as a device, it won't matter what programme you use if it cannot detect the camera.

I honestly can't remember if it showed as a device or not - at that time I didn't know about that way in  , but if he has a program like that, it may be worth trying

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions. I've now tried all of them, but still no joy!

I guess it's time to admit to defeat and buy myself a card reader.
