As Enrique suggested I wouldn't skimp on video memory either. On the flip side also don't assume that a card with more memory is better either than a different model with less.

I'll be on and off the PC for the rest of the day so I'll check back for the other spec.

Griff, Alternative spec from Scan. Now forgive me if I'm wrong but apart from the dedicated gaming card is this much improvent on the cheap and cheerful 500 quid Comet specials that I initally wanted to buy and was put off.

Many thanks

Compared to the previous spec you posted this is less powerful (Older generation dual core processor, older socket type, older chipset, DDR2 rather than DDR3 etc..)

I'd personally avoid places like Comet, Currys, PC World and so on as they're PC's will be built on a budget using cheaper generic components with little to no thought to future upgrades.

If I were you I'd speak to the guy who provided the first quote and ask him to substitute the motherboard for something more suitable and slightly cheaper then use the cash saved for a better monitor.

Nice one Griff, just what I wanted to hear about the Comet machines at that price to justify the faffing about I'm doing now.

One quick question please. I'll certainly mention if we could swap the motherboard but do you think if we did that I'd still be able to keep the i5 processor with a cheaper one?

In all honesty the chap said this cheaper system is old hat now so for a £100 I think I'm being daft considering it. I'll certainly ask about the board and the monitor upgrade though............at least he'll think I know what I'm talking about before I order  Oh by the way a note at the end of the quote said they'd knock delivery charges off if I order before tuesday

There's loads of LGA1156 boards out there with P55, H55, H57 chipsets all of which will support the i5 processor. Your guy just chose one of the more expensive/enthusiast boards (maybe stock availability or personal preference on his behalf) but a cheaper board will do just as good a job for your needs.

Something like this would be perfect - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-P7P ... rd-LGA1156

That's a £50 saving (Depending where the parts are sourced from) which you can put to good use elsewhere and it would make absolutely no discernible difference to the performance of the PC over-all.

Again Griff cuts through the black magic. I was led to believe it had to be this board to power the i5........so glad I posted this on here, many thanks yet again for this. Leaves me with a few questions to ask tomorrow now...................if my minds still not addled from battling with foreigners over postal costs on Ebay

Just to demonstrate what I was saying about the board I suggested, and to remove the last shred of doubt you may have, take a look here - http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=e7Zic83PvQSr80Lm

On the right click on "CPU support list" and you'll see the all the cpu's it supports including the i5 variants.

Lads, result thanks to your help.I've had a lot on of late but finally decided to get this sorted earlier today. Opted for the spec posted on here (i5) but with a lesser motherboard that would still do the job I needed.............but at a few bob cheaper to upgrade monitor.

Well tumbleweed blew when I said that and I recieved a lecture on the workings of modern PCs and matching components.
I reiterated what I'd like but again the sucking in of air through teeth was audible :wtf:

"Borrox to it then" I said "I'll go somwhere else"................this resulted in me getting the above higher spec, components at a further 50 quid off and free delivery to save a deal

I left the montor for now and will pick up one from the high street stores hopefully this weekend.............good makes at good prices at Comet etc.

Just need to find the time to get it built now, get me wheel and have a race

Many thanks to all who had input..............it was much appreciated and saved me a few bob too.

Thanks again.
