What type/genre of website would require a virtual dedicated server?

Hi Bongtrees,
I would guess you have had a Google.........................and found stuff like this.......

http://www.besthostratings.com/articles ... erver.html

As an example some pricing and what spec you could expect.................

http://www.rapidswitch.com/dedicatedservers.aspx

.Griff will have some answers when he picks up on this............. 8)

Generally speaking..

When you want to host more than one site on it
When you need more control of the back end
When you want better support

Not really genre specific but anything that needs an SSL cert would need a dedicated server rather than shared hosting, so ecommerce sites for example

There's no genre or type of website that would specifically require a VPS. It is however cheaper than renting a dedi server and retains most of the advantages, independent OS, ability to install your own choice of software and so on but as Andy T quite rightly points out certain types of websites would need their own box.

Think I'd better get one for me and the missus!
