How do I re-enter my internet settigs?

Postby Mowser » Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:11 pm

Here we go again! Everything was working a treat until an hour ago. I suddenly lost the internet.
I did all the usual stuff to no avail. I phoned the "helpline" and was given all the IP etc numbers. The "helper" assumed I knew what to do!

I then switched off the beast and restarted it. Armed with my list of numbers, I switched on the router and miraculously it is working again. It must have re-set itself.

Question ... if it happens again, where do I key in the numbers? I've seen a few places in the control panel but there aren't enough "boxes" or my numbers.

I have five lines in total to enter. WTF?

(By the way, when I checked the settings they were different from what I was told)

Hi Mowser,

"I did all the usual stuff to no avail"
And what was that perchance........... :?: :?:

What numbers were you given. :?:
What Windows OS version are you running.

If you " loose" the internet, its a good chance that its the ISP that has gone down, so best to just power down the computer and router, then power up in reverse order.

Usual stuff = swearing then checking my internet settings. I then clicked "repair" - and that has NEVER worked. I powered off then on but forgot to disconnect the router from the mains.

I'm on Windows XP with all the updates (until they stop support). The numbers given were ...

192.192.1.45
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
80.58.61.250
80.58.61.254

I didn't have to enter these as the beast did it after I reconnected. I went to the Network Connections but the first set of numbers was different. The last two digits are 33

(I changed nothing - NOTHING ah tells ye!)

I now wish to buy a "Internet settings for Dummies" book. Any suggestions?

These settings are given by ISPs.The are the prefered DNS and alt DNS numbers. The first ones are the IP addresses
I have been given various ones over the years but my prefered method of getting back online or when the service is slow is to reboot the router...It works every time

Thanks Mark. Off for tea. Mañana (assuming the beast still works).

Hi Mowser,
Your Network connection would normally be set to "Get IP automatically"

So powering down/up would reset and you would be good to go.

If you look up where 192.192.1.45 is you will find its allocated to a Taiwan location!
Are you sure that is what they gave you as its your IP address? What is the IP address after you rebooted?

The 192.168.1.1 was probably issued by the router as its the gateway address.
The 2 DNS addresses are located in Madrid, Spain but these could be anywhere.

Just curious about the 192.192.1.45 address.
Due to the high cost of energy, the light at the end of the tunnel will be shut off until further notice.

Hi,
I would think Mowser made a typo, as it would normally be 192.168.

The real IP can be got by ...

http://www.whatismyip.com/

or running http://speedtest.net

Indeed it was an error. In my haste I repeated the first set of numbers. It should be of course 192.168.1.45

Mowser, you certainly have your share of computer problems! If it's any consolation, my main computer is in intensive care in the computer hospital having a nasty virus removal operation. It's seemingly a new one, and you literally can't do anything, believe me, you don't want it. My man has been on it a couple of days, seemingly loads of files are infected, it's a matter of removing the HD, trying to clean everything up, and hopefully put it back as it was! I have other computers, but that's the one with Photoshop and all my other photo programmes, and as luck would have it, we've had great weather and I've got a ton of photos to process. Thought I'd cheer you up, you aren't alone!
