Hi Julie,
Good to hear you have a result.
What did you contract for.....up to 4Mb then your connection is good.
The upload is good too, would normally hope for 0.35 -0.45MB

Re: Adsl up and running
Yes it was up to 4.
How do I know if it is locked or open to anyone outside ? At home I had a password so you had to know that to use my connection, I forgot to ask the woman about it, Thanks.

You'll need to encrypt your router. Best you do a search for your particular router, WPA is a better option than WEP when it comes to actually setting it up.

Hi Guy's
Encryption is so important, i can crack WEP, Not that i want or need to, I just use it for our own network security testing!
Use WPA Always if your router allows it as already suggested. If your network is left open then the police will knock at your door if the wrong type of person decides to visit a non desirable website.
Just for your info, If you use BT they always sent out the Thomson router with wireless open, You should not have any Red lights! Why i do not know.
Happy surfing.
Regards, Carl.

Re: Adsl up and running
Hi Julie,
How are you connecting your system to the router, if wireless and you just connected then your network is open. Need to get it sorted....you will have to login to the router to setup the security then apply the settings to your system when you connect.
If you post make and model we can tell you how to login to router and where to look for security configuration section.
Thanks

Hi Julie,
Surprised that the installers didn't setup wireless security with you.
If you Google SMC7901WBRA2 default password
the first one up is a FAQ (pdf) you will need to read up on login/access to your router and wireless security.
To connect to router .......use a RJ45 cable from your laptop/system and plug into router.

Hi Julie,
The security needs to be set up on the router first, you will have to take that and laptop to a techie.

Re: Adsl up and running
I didn't realise they could set a router password remotely. Not that quickly anyway as you would have had to enable remote access. Are you sure it is the router that is now password protected and not just your talktalk account?
If it was me, for my own peace of mind, I would ask a friend with a laptop to come round and see if they can connect to the internet on your network. If they are asked for a password then no problem, but better safe than sorry.

Excellent. Sounds like good customer service, which isn't common these days.

Hi,
Depending on what wireless software you have running on your system you can scan for networks and see what is around your location, you can also see what security if any the other networks have WPA/WEP/NONE ,also useful if loads of networks about so you can change your channel number away from the others.
