Fans (Pedestal/Ceiling/Desktop)
Just recently we've had problems with two fans packing-in. In both cases it was a problem with the 'Capacitor' (apparently this kickstarts the fan motor). I replaced one myself which I managed to extract from an old fan. These pedestal fans were plugged into the mains via a surge unit, so no blame there.
I can't seem to find an Spanish electrical store to get a replacement capacitor. In searching the internet for a online supplier, either, in the UK or Spain, I am led to the wholesalers usually in China, it's very unlikely that they'll mail me one from there, they only cost around 3€.
Does anyone know of an electronics type store on the coast that may supply a fan starter motor capacitor. Here's to the kind of thing I'm looking for http://ahgrsl.en.ec21.com/Ceiling_Fan_C ... 86707.html

Most white goods spares (especially brands purchased in Spain) are available from;
Cumarjus
C/Magallenas,
Edif. Sur2
Velez Malaga
952 50 72 00
Go along with the offending part and chances are they'll have it or can order it.
They speak Spanish only.

Hi Telboy,
Take along a picture of the item................works well for getting the right item, especially up this way with heavy dialect and shortened words.

Cheers Guys
But I think I'll just cut-my-losses and buy a new fan. However, I'll keep hold of the duff fan and if I'm down towards the coast I'll bob-in to Cumarjus to see about a replacement part.

Just out of interest how did you work out it was the capacitor that was the problem?
Re: Fans (Pedestal/Ceiling/Desktop)
Here ya go
Capacitors from RS
Buy online and available from the Spanish outlet.
Look out for the prices though. They'll be excluding VAT and P&P could be high - so it's best to buy a few

I have a Sparky I call out if I have any problems, however, since he has quite a distance to travel, he asked me what the problem was. I told him that the fan turning extremely slowly on its lowest setting and not at all on its faster settings, he told me instantly what the problem was.Chunky Monky wrote:Hi Terry, telboy wrote:Just recently we've had problems with two fans packing-in. Since I've a small amount of knowledge of electrical work I managed to take the capacitor from a working fan (of similar spec) and attache it to the broken one to test it, and it worked like new, no soldering involved, just a few screws. Maybe there should be a health warning with this last paragraph.
So, as I said in my last post, its a lot cheaper to just replace old or broken with new. It could have cost me a few bob just to pay for a Sparky and his travelling time just to diagnose the problem and then pay again to come and fix it.
Pete - Wrong type of capacitors, they look like the circuit board type - cheers anywaypete_l wrote:Here ya go

Re: Fans (Pedestal/Ceiling/Desktop)
Have you looked at the Ebay link I posted?
They are definitely the correct type and far cheaper than a new fan.
Cheers

Cheers Gerry - Sorry forgot to reply to your post.
Yes One of these would be ideal, but all the links lead to a company in Hong Kong or elsewhere in the Far East. I've never bought anything direct from there before, I find it hard to believe they'd post me one item free of postal charges, I thought they were only interested in bulk sales.

Yes they will, don't know how they make a profit.telboy wrote:, I find it hard to believe they'd post me one item free of postal charges,
I have ordered many, single items, from China and Hong Kong.
The downside is that they usually take about 3 weeks to arrive.
Cheers

Postage to Spain is about 1GBP. Don't know how they make a profit.

If an order takes 3 weeks maybe delivered by container ship
I'll probably give it a try, but still purchase a new fan in the mean time.
Cheers
