ZenMate

Postby barry » Mon Feb 17, 2014 5:22 pm

I think that the ZenMate extension has started to slow my internet speed, when I test against IE it is far slower. Any idea why anybody?

I use Zenmate when needed and have done numerous speed tests and to be honest not notice a significant decrease in speed when assigned to U.K IP, at most a 5-10%

That has been my case until this week-end and today, and to add to the frustration it is not constant, like with anything more difficult to fix when not happening all the time.

I use Zenmate with Chrome and have just checked my speed; 1.02 Mbs, fastest I have ever had.

I have just tested, 1st with ZenMate switched off...

And then with it switched on (to the UK location)...

As you can see there is no noticeable difference in speed.

The same seemed to have happened with the Adtelly extension last night. BBCiPllayer got slower and slower until it finally stopped working. I did a speed test and it was down to 0.53mbs. I closed it down and did another test and it was back up to 3.5mbs, so I don't know if these extensions can slow down your internet as it presumably is routed through via a UK IP address.

Could be the case as if I get a slow connection sometimes it can be resolved by closing chrome then opening again! Presumably it then picks up another ip address

I think you find that its just Contention. The more people on the same Shared IP address at the same time increases the ping time which effectively slows the DATA RATE not necessarily the Speed.

Most IP have a planned contention of, say - 100 users per IP address sharing a possible speed of 100mbps.
If 10 people instantaneously demand data the rate would be obviously 10mbps ... BUT if 20 do it ... well you do the maths ...

There are a lot more people all trying to use the internet and calling heavy download demands at much the same time ... in the evening to watch TV.

Low cost ISP have high contention Ratios ... This is a case of you pay your money and you take your choice . You get what you pay for

Yes my ping was 212 when the download speed read 0.53, which was the highest I have seen when I have tested the speed. It is free, so I can't really complain!
