UK moaners don't know they're born!

Postby peteroldracer » Sat Apr 26, 2014 8:53 pm

Reading the recent publicity about poor and variable broadband speeds across the UK, I suggest they should try coping with the service here: tonight my best reading has been 0.19 mbps, the worst 0.16!
Just in case those folk being talked about on the current thread were thinking of an internet-based business, should they be daft enough to come over!

Funnily enough I was just thinking the exact opposite. Watching live BBC all evening. A few moments buffering during the Lottery draw (which always happens). And I have the slowest Internet speed in Spain.

Maybe I have been here too long but I am quite happy with the speed of the internet. When I first came here you had to plug the computer into the phone jack and it blocked your phone when you used it. It seems pretty speedy but I am in a town.
Perhaps if I tried the internet in UK I would realise what I was missing!

Hi Nimrod,

That's UK speeds..........who are you using..........ok I can see that you will not post this info as every one and his cat will change and you will be back to Peter's speed.

Peter:: Keep banging on your ISP's door that's totally unacceptable for 3Mbps link ( if that is your contract)

Hello Enrique,
Yes it is UK,it's BT Infinity.
I believe that could be almost doubled if I paid more.

Hi Peter,
Should you ever get on again and read this post...............

Run a Ping Test.............its on the same site.... http://www.pingtest.net/

You should have 0% packet loss

Example...................

FYI
Your upload 0.35Mbps speed is average for Spanish ISP's

Hi Enrique: I will do the ping test when I have the laptop fired up. It is not available to modern devices like an iPad...

Peter,
Your speeds are slow but I've also read that there are remote areas in the UK that are slow as well or non existent and they need to use other means.
I have a friend who lives 40 KMs from Bilbao in Castilla and has no land line but people living just 200 metres away have.
My point is that this is your situation. Not everybody in Spain has the same problems as you so my advice isn't that if you come to Spain and need good internet speeds, not to bother......

but to make sure your in an area where you know you have a land line fibre-optic or cable.

Did a speed check yesterday and had a download speed of 0.8Mb/s... and that is in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. I'm told I'm "near the end of the line".

Satellite covers all of Spain, provided you have a clear view of the sky in a SSE direction.

And so you don't think you have to live in a city centre to get high speeds, this is the view from my house

That ping test....

Not much wrong there - not at this time of day anyway.

Everything was really bad last night, even at 5 am this morning, so I do not know what is going on.

Our new(ish) 20mbps cable broadband for €18 per month (inc IVA) seems pretty good value to me, unlimited downloads and no fair usage policy. The actual speed is around 19.5 mbps. A considerable saving on what we were paying previously, even before the company concerned virtually doubled their charges, for less than a third of that speed.

The cable company also offer a 30mbps connection plus phone for €38.76 + IVA. According to the press reports I've seen 30mbps is classed as superfast even in the UK, and the cost is not too dissimilar if line rental in the UK is taken into account. They do a 50mbps service too, but I don't know how much that costs.

So, as Mark Wilding said, you don't necessarily have to live in a Spanish city centre to get a decent connection - nor pay a fortune for it.

I have three friends, all within a stones throw of you, all with Riosat and none have the problems you have.

Time you started to wag the finger.

We're 1.5 miles away from a superfast bb exchange in the UK. Sadly it's 1.5 miles down a country road.

Speed 2.1MBS.
