Wanted: a good techy for network problems

Postby peteroldracer » Fri Sep 25, 2015 5:25 pm

Regular readers will know I have a love/hate relationship with my ISP....but with out the love, as I have constant breaks in service that they blame on something within my house, but are unable to help with solving it.
Yesterday I had break after break, yet they have sent me a printout of how it looks at their end that suggests they are sending the signal, it is me that is not seeing it.
Can anyone suggest a good qualified technical guy who works in the Velez campo area who would look at all aspects of my setup and get it working reliably? Just as an example this is part of today's log:

Riosat have suggested previously a guy who turned out to be a barber, who now repairs 4x4 cars at his house, who came and fiddled about for an hour with little effect except getting €20 off me - I want someone who knows what they are doing.
Latest problem is the printer that has worked perfectly on wifi for months will not go online to print, or accept an updated driver from Epson, yet accepted an update from the same source to the scanner part of it! I can only now print via USB cable from my laptop, and before I rush off to buy a modern 3-in-1 that also prints wirelessly from iPad or android (Epson @ c €52) I would like to know the wireless network is solid.
Recommendations please!

In my experience, wifi printers are never perfect and from time to time get the same problem as you.I don't actually try to update the drivers but uninstall the existing ones

Go to control panel then installed devices or printers. Click into the icon for your default printer and press the uninstall option.

Then click add printer and follow the wizard , remember you want to install over a network then allow Windows to find the correct drivers.

That usually works for me.

Before you do anything, get "Wifi analyzer" or similar to your smartphone and try to gauge the signal close to your printer. If it drops out below 70 it is probably a router issue.

The router cannot be too close to the printer and it usually cannot be too far either (like behind a concrete wall).

I should clarify that this problem has gone on for years, with most if the day everything working well enough - in fact recent months it has got better, then all of a sudden it all goes pearshaped! The printer sits less than 30cm from the router, so signal strength can hardly be an issue. Yesterday the printer kept coming up as 'Offline' so among other things I reset the Network settings via the printer keyboard. Three times it said 'failed' then said 'OK', but still showed offline. I went for a cuppa, only to find that magically it would print! Today nothing will get it going.
I have made two errors tonight: one was to read the post from markwilding, who has been on my ignore list for quite a while, the second to follow his advice. Now it cannot find the printer to reinstall it....
It needs a proper expert, which is a long way from what I am!

Lost a printer? What happens if you click the window icon (bottom left) and click "Devices and printers"?

How rude you are Peter, I was trying to help you.
If you have me on ignore, you won't be able to read this but if you don't
Just read and learn

Computing is not an exact science and there could be 101 reason why you are having problems and you have to accept that it's not being inept that is causing your problems. The WiFi signal might be affected by other household electronics such as microwave oven or cordless phones or it might be that you have dead spots. thick Walls, other peoples' WiFi signals or maybe your router is set up incorrectly. Maybe you just have a useless router. Have you tested the speed with an Ethernet cable plugged in and then through Wi-Fi to test how much of the signal is lost throughout the house? A router given to me by my ISP could only accept a maximum of 3 things at the same time and had to be rebooted to clear the settings all the time.

I was never happy with the results of a Wi-Fi extender that kept having to be reset and causing IP conflicts. In the end I bought a much more powerful router which extends the signal much further.

Instead of blaming everybody else all the time for your shortcomings, why don't you just do what most other sensible people do and google your problem and go through the various instructions, which are offered by people who have been in your situation, one by one.

If you can't find your printer while following my instructions just say so and I'll tell you how to do it in a different way. Just plug the USB cable in and reinstall it that way.

In this case the ISP almost certainly cannot be blamed, The printer is not connected to the web so it must be a problem in the network.
The only way to blame them is if he has been given a duff router. If the router isn't suitable for the size of the house, that's not their problem.

To the OP: Comares is high on the hill so I assume your Internet is delivered by 4G network?
To print wirelessly you don't need to be on Internet but the printer and the pc or tablet or smartphone have to be in the same home network and connected to each other at the time of printing. It means that while you can't surf the net but you still can print some thing that are already in your pc, or tablet etc. photo for example. It also means that while you are surfing the net OK but you can't print as your pc or tablet can't see each other.
So the problems of not connect to the Internet and not printing wirelessly are 2 different issues which need to be differentiate. Steps must be taken to find which component is/are as fault or indeed the problem of connecting to the Internet is the ISP all along.

Like I wrote, it should not be too close. 30 cm is like the absolute minimum, try to expand the distance. It should often preferably be more than 1 meter.

This is why I want a real expert: torrox-campo your assumption is incorrect; flexo - whereever you read is proved nonsense by that the fact that the printer has worked perfectly wirelessly for the past four months with the router perched actually on top of it, to keep it out of reach of my twin grandsons when they visited!
I would like someone with a good track record, to come along and reset everything, and leave me with a reliable wifi network, subject only to the sometimes awful, usually bad, and rarely good service provided by RioSat!

Good morning peteroldracer,

While you're awaiting answers some things you may be able to do.................
Have to presume some things as you haven't given details of your setup.
Riosat present a connection into your house and you connect your wireless Router to it.
If they give out local IP address in their box on the roof then you can plug your PC/Laptop direct in to this with Ethernet Cable and run your Uptime Network Monitoring program, this will bypass your router so you will see if its a problem with Riosat.

As for the Printer I would set it up to have a Static IP out of the range of your normal DHCP setup, and use the IP in the setup . As this will be above your pay scale its an Idea for when you get a Techy in.....
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Or as the router is sitting under the printer, permanently connect it with a Ethernet cable.

I am sorry Peter for wrong assumption and if the internet is delivered by landine it is easier to sort out. What I said after is still correct! Computer network was my bread and butter (Cisco). PM me if you want some help.
