Where to Put The Dead Bodies?

Postby Unicorn » Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:05 am

Hi there

My laptop died this morning. There is no hope, the on switch doesn't work, and I think it was about six years old. RIP. And happily I have ordered a second hand HP x 2 which should be coming any day on Amazon which will do me for a while.

But what to do with the old computers/laptops? I have two now, in the house, dead but unburied, that I shall never use again, but how to dispose of them?

Any advice gratefully, as usual, received!!

Good morning Unicorn,
Remove the hard drives, buy an External USB 3 disk enclosure for 2.5 disk.

Then you will have them for extra offline Backups/storage

Examples::

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keyw ... aeqd4sm4_b

Your local Punto Limpio may have facilities to take them (computers)

Up this way there is a Internet Café (yes they are still about) that will take dead computer equipment as he bulk recycles .

If you do ultimately want to securely dispose of a hard disk, the method I have used is to drill a hole right through the disk enclosure which renders the disks inside totally unrecoverable.

No, not unless you want it to end up in Nigeria where they will strip off all your data and csam you forever!

Either drill it out or smash it (really smash it!!).

Yes, I guess you are right.

I have had to dispose of quite a few PCs (don't ask!) I always leave alongside the recycling bins. They usually disappear within minutes - there is good scrap value in them.

Hiya

Yes, I meant the laptop not the hard drive. I don't want to end up in Nigeria stripped bare!

Hi Unicorn,
That's a nice disk to have as an External drive, will be able to plug into another computers USB port
Either retrieve the data from it or use it as a backup/storage device.

Get a USB 3 External disk enclosure and pop it in.

This one looks to be made for you............. :D

Better still, since you are in Spain, buy it from Amazon.es - less postage.

Cheers guys that looks great. Stupid question again, what about the ribbony but at the end? Do I take the
aluminium casing off it, it looks like it can be prised off easily?

That computer I had the dead one, was Windows 7 the new one is 8.2 (I think), is that OK?

If it works it will be handy to not have lost the data.

You are a great help guys / I'm not very computer literate but follow instructions well!!!

PS Trying to find one on Amazon Spain without having to try Prime. Not really bothered if it takes a long time to arrive.

The only difference if you are a Premium subscriber is that it is next day delivery at no charge. Normal customers pay €2.99 for about 2 days. Cheaper than paying postage from the UK site. Amazon Prime is a UK offering, totally different from Amazon Premium in Spain.

Well, my disk cover thing arrived just now, I put the old HDD into it plugged into the old notebook and the drive came up, no problem.

I bought quite a cheap cover, made by TOOQ, but it seems solid. I thought I´d buy a cheapie because I would probably cxxk it up but it seems fine.

I must be on a roll.................

SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.7 80 gb
HITACHI DESKSTAR SAYING CAPACITY 160 GB
If I bought one of the docking stations could I use these H/Drives as extra storage on my laptop and are they easy to set up, also could you give me an idea of what type of docking station I will need.
Thank you

There are 2 different type of hard drive connections: IDE and Sata. IDE is very old since the beginning of computer upto about 2006-2007 then replaced by Sata connection. Since you didnt say what type of connections the hotjack dual bay below caters for both:

You might find it better to buy a new 2.5" external drive for just over €50. No power supply needed (unlike the external 3.5" enclosures and much smaller and with 1000gb storage.

Worth considering.
