5G in Spain

Postby El Cid » Tue Jan 05, 2021 4:16 pm

Movistar are rolling out mobile 5G coverage in Spain at an amazing rate. They only started a few months ago and it’s available in all the major towns, but I was really surprised to see that there is now a 5G signal in La Herradura, not exactly a major conurbation!

I think the UK will take years to achieve the same.

Whether is of any real benefit remains to be seen!

Hola

The problem with 5G is that it doesn't travel as far as 4G which doesn't travel as far as 3G and while I'm at it, 2G is best for difficult areas !!!
5G is fast but not so reliable but the speed is what everyone goes on about whereas in reality, 4G is sufficient for most things the "average" person does

I agree, It will be interesting to see what the real benefits are. I can stream football from SKY on my iPad via 4G with no problem and downloading a 10 minute listening exercise only takes a few seconds from my cloud account. I won't be in a rush to change my year old Iphone just yet .

Mark , do you use DNS to stream Sky ( football).?

I find that Movistar change your 4G ip quite regularly and so you might get an hour or three before smart dns is inactive. Maybe Sky works due to agreement up to end Dec 2020 to be able to use Sky on ones travels. Does it still work this January.

Until last week, I didn't use anything for Sky but since Brexit it's necessary to use one. When away from the house on my laptop, phone and iPad I use the Smart DNS VPN app and at home, Smart DNS with Smarty as a back up if needed.
There is a thread dedicated to this.

You should be able to stream with 4G in Spain quite adequately. I get over 150mb/s on most 4G connections.

Watching ads for broadband on UK TV and in the press, it seems to me that this is another area where speeds up to 500 mbps is more available here in Spain than in the UK as well.

Hi,
Beware of the speeds advertised in the Media.

Recently looked a "package" .................... 145MB Download splashed about. Actually did a site check and they could get 27MB.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
