Smudging Print

Postby jonbar.1 » Fri Nov 19, 2021 11:46 am

I've just noticed,( after all these years! ) that, when I touch a home- printed document; that the ink smudges.
Even on some documents which were printed a couple of years ago,on a previous printer.
I only realised this because I happened to touch a document with a wet finger ( don't ask!)
Do I have a problem with printers, ink, paper or my finger?
It has never been a cause for concern but is now really irritating me
Any clues ?

You have to pay (a lot) extra for waterproof ink, even assuming any is available for your printer...

Does that mean that,in fact I don't have faulty stuff, and that smudgey print is the norm?
If so I'm pleased to hear it.
I don't think I'll be paying extra for waterproof ink.

Hi jonbar.1,

Are you using compatible cartridges.............. :?:

Using OEM cartridges on my very old HP printer no smudging either with dry or wet hands........... :D
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

I printed an invoice on my laser printer an hour ago. Just touched the print and it didn’t smudge. I use genuine HP cartridges.

I always use original toners and cartridges. Never had a smudging problem.

A laser printer does not use ink!

As far as I know, the only inks that don’t smudge when any water gets on them are the relatively rare waterproof inks.

Compatible inks use the same ink as the OEM cartridges. The printer manufacturers don’t make ink, they just sell it at an outrageous price. I used to work for a company that manufactured printers. 70% of their profit came from the ink.

There is no evidence that I have seen that proves that compatible ink is inferior in any way.

I have never bought an OEM cartridge in 25 years and never had a problem.

I am using the genuine cartridges.
As I said in my original posting; I dug out 5-6 year old documents, printed on 4 different printers. They all smudge if I rub the print with a wet finger.
The crazy thing is, I have never noticed!
At the end of the day it's no big deal.I'm unlikely to wander out into the rain with the documents; let alone knowingly rub them with a wet finger!

Just spoke to the company who supplied my printer.
They gave,I believe, the definitive answer:
"Inkjet printers use water-based inks; so they will smudge when in contact with moisture"
