Anti-virus advice
Anti-virus advice
Please could any "Techs" offer some advice?
I have, for the last few years used Kaspersky as my antivirus.I am due to renew this soon.
Recently I have been reading that the built-in "Windows10 security" is excellent on it's own and that a third-party antivirus is not necessary ( depending on usage). When I Google the reviews, W10 security is rated highly.
My laptop is used only for basic "home" purposes:
Internet, emails, a bit of Youtube browsing, normal domestic online banking & buying stuff from Amazon etc.(I don't watch videos or play games)
Although I am happy enough with Kaspersky, it would be great not to have it around; sticking it's oar in every 5 minutes
Would I be safe with just the Windows ?
Thankyou,in advance.JB

Hi jonbar.1,
Windows AV is all you need on a day to day basis.........I've been using it for some years and not had any issues.

Thanks Enrique.
Delighted to hear this
Have you actually been using Windows as a "stand-alone" or alongside another AV?
Cheers J B.

Re: Anti-virus advice
Windows AV is what I use and a regular scan with Malwarebytes.

Cheers Mark.
At risk of sounding dim: what is " Malwarebytes"?

Hi jonbar.1,
Following on from Mark's Post...........
Malwarebytes ...."Malwarebytes is an anti-malware software for Microsoft Windows"
Free edition is all you need............I use this one.
https://www.malwarebytes.com/solutions/free-antivirus
I always run it prior to doing an Image Backup of the Systems.
You would never run two Anti-Virus programs.

Re: Anti-virus advice
Hi jonbar.1,
Third Party AV's will disable the Windows one.
An Image backup..........
"With disk image backups, the software takes an image of the entire hard disk. This lets you restore the entire system to another computer, including the operating system, applications, browser history, preferences, settings, bookmarks, device drivers, and all of the files you created and downloaded."
So if you have a HDD fail you can Restore the Image and be backup and running in a very short while......
Example...... my Image backup takes 4 Mins.........booting a Standalone USB recovery disk and restoring ...10 mins
The times will depend on the speed of your disks and system..........

Re: Anti-virus advice
Thanks Enrique.
I take it that ( as per Mark's info also) Malwarebytes is a complement to Windows Security.
I will probably,in that case,run both.
Sorry to have been a bit long-winded about this.

Hi jonbar.1,
" will probably,in that case, run both."........Malwarebytes Free run manually say once a week, then "Quite Malwarebytes". no need to have it running in the background.
Note:: Malwarebytes front windows will say "Your not fully protected" , ignore this they want you by full version.

Re: Anti-virus advice
Hi Chrissiehope,
Yes............With your low spec PC this bloated AV needs to go,
https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article ... s/#idt_020
A third way to remove...........
Use Revouninstaller...........don't reboot before doing the "Advanced Scan"................delete all items that pop up and then Reboot.
Windows AV should start on Bootup.,,,,,,,,,, check in Settings --> Windows Security
