Windows Security Scan

Postby jonbar.1 » Tue Aug 23, 2022 12:41 pm

I am doing my first ever full scan using Windows Security.
It has already scanned 400,000 files, yet the estimated time remining keeps going up ( currently showing 20hours!)
the last time I did a full scan I was using kaspersky ( it took 4.5 hours / 1.600,000 files))
two questions please ;
1) Why is my Windows scan showing such an enormous "time-remaining" figure ?
2) In the event of having to leave the computer ( to go to bed?) should I have created specific Power Options settings?
EG: "Screen turn-off" & "Goes to sleep" times.
At the moment they are both set to "Never" ( probably naively) so that the scan is not stopped.
any tips please?

Hi johnbar1,
If u want to stick with it make sure it's plugged in.
I wouldn't run full scan using windows
Malwarebytes would be better and faster even for full scan

Thankyou Enrique.
As explained I am already running the scan.
Probably best to let it run?
I am now using Windows Security only now.( did not renew Kaspersky) My decision to use windows was based on advice from yourself & Mark on 28th June.( Thanks again for that chaps)
You suggested that Windows was good enough on it's own.
I'm a bit confused now you are saying." You wouldn't run a scan using Windows"
Any answers by the way,to my two questions?

Hi jonbar.1,
Leave Windows Security to run normally..........there is no need to manually run a full scan.

I run Malwarebytes (free) prior to doing a image backup as it will give a different take on scanned files.

:!: :!: ADDED: Running a full scan..........its very resource hungry and will push the CPU temperature way up

I'd cancel out and get on with life.................. :!: Like what I've just done :!:

I suppose the duration of the scan depends on the power of the PC. After reading this thread, I did a full scan, and it took around 30 minutes. I would say It's probably the first time I have done one as I just have it on automatic scan.

It's still necessary to run Malwarebytes but if you don't want to pay, you have to scan manually. I hadn't done one recently, so I did one and it picked up some nasties. I will try to do it at least a couple of times a month from now on.

I do malwarebytes every morning when I turn the pc on. So far it has come up clean, apart from the first one which threw up a lot, all from auslogic, which had been istalled by the person who was increasing my HD capacity. I immediately uninstalled it :-)

All i can say is thank bleep for whoever created tablets and chromebooks. Microsoft is such a hassle for just being able to get on the net. I took great enjoyment smashing up my last P.C before dumping all things bill gates!
