Using a second router

Postby Wicksey » Wed Jan 22, 2025 4:16 pm

Just out of interest, I wondered if it is possible to connect a second router to an existing one? I have my own router which I can access and add DNS addresses so I can use Smartproxydns. I think some internet providers do not allow you to access the router settings (my router went odd once and our internet provider supplied a new router but I couldn't access it and he wouldn't give me the password of it ... luckily my old router started to work again). Also, thinking about a long stay at a holiday rental house, could I attach my own router to the one in the property so I can use the DNS? At the moment I take my laptop and have the DNS set up in that.

Another questions, whilst on the subject of DNS. We have been watching the U channel (previously UKTV) which suddenly stopped working. Smartproxydns help desk seem to say they have fixed it but it still doesn't work for me on any platform other than the web browser on the TV rather oddly. Does anyone else watch this channel?

Yes, you can add a 2nd router to your existing router.
I have done it for many years.

An even simpler option is to use a WiFi range extender plugged into a mains socket which creates an additional WiFi access point. Depending on what you connect to it, you can change the DNS settings easily.

Hi Wicksey,

"At the moment I take my laptop and have the DNS set up in that"........ what more are you hoping to achieve by using a second Router :?:

It was for a longer stay somewhere. We still have a long break arranged for the summer, but have been considering a long term let if we still wanted to move much further away in order to test the waters, so to speak. Having my DNS set up in a router or similar would be easier.

Hi Wicksey,

Summary:

Sounds like you need to have a play............ before you go away :!:

Remove your SmartDNSproxy settings from your current router. and laptop ............. it will then default to your ISP DNS

Setup your second router to supply SmartDNSproxy DNS settings assuming you have no access to Primary router.

Let me know how you get on , if want further assistance please PM

I use a mesh router system. There are 2 advantages, first it extends a strong internet signal throughout the house. Secondly, I can use Smart DNS setting, which I cannot change in my main router. You just use an Ethernet cable to connect the two.
A second router can be connected in exactly the same way.

Thanks for all your replies. At some point I will try it out at home, although at the moment we're not sure when and where we are going. It's just that I did buy a new router thinking my old one had given up, but never unboxed it as the original started working again. I'm just thinking ahead really!
