Value of Car
I am trying to determine the value of my car for the purpose of calculating the cost of registering my LHD UK registered car onto spanish plates. I have a property in Spain but am classified as a non resident.
Can anyone point me in the correct direction?
Many thanks.

Re: Value of Car
Hi Len S,
The Gestor will have a book with the "price" and you will pay a % of this in tax.
The older the car the less you pay.

Re: Value of Car
I don't want to go to a Gestor until I have made the decision to re- register in Spain. The vehicle currently is in Spain and UK for 6 months/year.
Are the values published on-line?

Try here:
http://gestiona.madrid.org/vlin_valora_ ... MENU=1_2_1
I have never used it and have no idea if it works.
Also it is for Madrid not Andalucía but it should give you an indication.

Re: Value of Car
Hi Len S,
Pop down to your local Gestor that specialises in car transfers and get a quote.........should be free.
You can use the car in Spain for up to six months in one year , you will need European insurance cover for that time.
some info................

Re: Value of Car
Not quite right I think, Henry: the car may be in Spain for up to six months in one year whilst on non-Spanish plates - over that it must be removed or rematriculated.Enrique wrote:

Hi peteroldracer,
That's what I said .....except for the bit about removing it.
But added the link for the "rules".
Guess one has to work out where your main "6 months " living is and stick to the rules.

Re: Value of Car
I was being a bit pedantic, but I did not want Len S to think he could (instead of to-ing and fro-ing with the car as it seems he does) just leave it here on its Brit plates and use it for up to six months when he is over here in Spain.
I could take you to at least 20 Brit-reg heaps within 2 mile radius of here that have taken up residence as garden and driveway decorations, without benefit of tax discs or other minor legal niceties.

Re: Value of Car
These sites will give the original new value for the car and the second gives the applicable depreciation rates.

Re: Value of Car
Oh dear god pete let it go . The op said he wants to get a price on the import duty / tax so it sounds like he's a good guy. If you feel ypu must comment about UK cars in spain at least keep it to the other thread.peteroldracer wrote:I was being a bit pedantic, but I did not want Len S to think he could (instead of to-ing and fro-ing with the car as it seems he does) just leave it here on its Brit plates and use it for up to six months when he is over here in Spain.

From where I'm standing I'd say it's not really Peter who's being pedantic, as far as I'm concerned he's done absolutely nothing wrong, unless speaking truthfully is a sin
Ah! the full english!!
Re: Value of Car
If you have the make, model and year of the car, I have a table which might be slightly out of date, but will give you some idea.

Re: Value of Car
My 4 years old table, shows a Land Rover Freelander 1.8 Reference value 19,232 €uros.
The reference value is nothing to do with the purchase price or second hand price.
I believe the tax is 4% of the reference value times a percentage based on the age.
For a 2 year old Freelander above, this would be 4% times 67% of 19232 = €515.41.
The older the vehicle the lower the percentage - this is also how vehicle transfer tax is calculated, which is why most Spanish families keep cars a long time from new.
I am told that if you import your vehicle before registering on the padron or registering as a resident, that this can save on the taxes. I am not sure exactly how this works, but I am sure someone else on here will!

Re: Value of Car
White Horse, I think you are confusing transfer tax with the matriculation tax.
The value is calculated based on the notional new price with a depreciation factor allowed. As you point out, that is 67% for a 2 year old car. The value from the current tables (the link I posted earlier) of a Freelander 2 2.2TD is given as €34100 so the depreciated value would be €22847.
When you bring a foreign registered car to Spain and put it on Spanish plates you pay the same matriculation tax as anyone would pay when they buy a new car in Spain - it is not an import duty.
The rate of tax now depends on the CO2 emissions for the vehicle. There are 4 bands ranging from zero to 14.75%.
The Freelander, according to my copy of Top Gear, has a figure of 194 gm of CO2 so that puts it in the third band at 9.75%. That gives a tax figure of €2228 to be paid.
Yes, it is possible to avoid this tax altogether but only if you are becoming permanently resident in Spain. To do this you need to start the process within 60 days of signing on the register of foreigners and getting on the Padron. You need some paperwork from the UK embassy to prove that you have permanently left the UK.

All very complicated for a single European market and bearing in mind that tax has already been paid in the country of origin.
Scammed by the Spanish government again, with the EC happily cheering them on!

Not necessarily - the UK, for example, has no registration tax, just a modest fee.White Horse wrote: All very complicated for a single European market and bearing in mind that tax has already been paid in the country of origin.
Ireland has a registration tax and it is very much higher. If you took that Freelander over to Ireland they would take €8000 off you! If you bought a new one it would be €14000

Re: Value of Car
Our import duty is called vrt.... vehicle registration tax. Its calculated on the type of car (make model spec etc) age of car... mileage. If you have any interest its online https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showVRT At least you get a chance to see if you want to import the car. We dont use lawyers etc to do paperwork, its the same as the UKEl Cid wrote:

Re: Value of Car
One of the great things that prospective emigrants can get from joining A.com before they move, is that they should be so much more aware than the blissfully ignorant about some of the important factors to make a decision on.
For example, we disposed of our cars in the UK before moving here, hiring whilst we looked round for the "right" Spanish car, saving all the potential costs and trauma of rematriculating.
