One-way Van hire

Postby scampicat » Thu Nov 24, 2011 4:08 pm

Has anyone any recommendations for hiring a transit-sized van from Malaga airport and returning it in the Midlands (UK)?

I can only advise you to use caution: friends have used one way hirers (not certain which company, but Torre del Mar is the nearest coast town) and did not get a decent van, more of a wreck that just got them to the UK. The company appeared to buy old bangers in the UK, then hire them out to go back and forth until they fell apart! It also took a long time to get their deposit back - Hirer Beware!

Thanks all for your responses.

Having researched a bit more, this option is too expensive for what we want, so will have to go on to Plan B (whatever that is!).

Basically we have a 200cc scooter with very low mileage that we can't sell and were thinking of taking it back to the UK. It's just how to get it there! (Too far to ride it there :) )

Just trying to think of a way to do it. It would be a great shame to have to scrap it just because we can't sell it!!

Yes, we bought it brand new in Spain in 2005. We can't sell it because no-body wants to buy it, although we haven't advertised it other than locally in our rural area. I think the main problem is that it is 200cc, so you need a motorcycle licence to ride it..

It needs an ITV , we didn't bother because it is not on the road, but it has only done 3500 km, should have no problem passing an ITV. It has always been kept under cover.

If you know of anywhere we might advertise it, please let me know! We are in rural Granada province.

If you decide to ship it back to the UK rather than sell, you could try http://www.anyvan.com/.
We had lots of household items to bring over and I saw the anyvan site mentioned in a thread on here, so gave it a go. You just post what you want moving from where to where, then hauliers bid for your job. Our first quote was for £ 1100, and about 20 bids later I accepted a bid of £280 to collect our stuff
from the Midlands on the Thursday and deliver it to Alcaudete on the Saturday. All arrived intact & on time. I would have paid that amount for the ferry crossing alone in my own van, so I was well chuffed.

I also use www.loadup.co.uk did a full house move for 500 quid :) but you do get some silly quotes too, i always just look for back loads not removals as such.

If I might add, I could have been interested in buying the scooter, but when I read that it has no ITV, and "because it is not on the road" it would be impossible for anyone to buy it and ride it home!
If yoy decide to sell here, get it sorted and make it an attractive proposition, without the fear that a journey to view and maybe buy would be a waste of time.
