Insurance company options and ITV question
Hi all,
I'll be in Spain from Monday with my UK car, I've attempted to enter my car details on Linea direct but their system said they cannot offer me a price. Could you please provide a list of possible insurers please? thank you!
Also, is a UK MOT required to do an ITV, or is that just duplicating things. I.e. if I'm having an ITV there's not point to do an MOT before I leave?
Cheers

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
This is very confused.
Are you visiting or staying ?
Is your car road legal in the uk, for how long ?
if you are visiting then there is no need for ITV as you are road legal in the uk.
There is no need to insure while you are road legal in the uk.
Different ball game if you intent to stay more than, I think, six months.

Ring Linea Directa, they have English speaking staff.
See the 8th post down is this link for the numbers:
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=30257&p=285465&hilit=Linea+Directa#p285465
Before you can re-register your car on to Spanish number plates it will have to undergo the ITV (equivalent to the MoT) irrespective of any UK MoT. However, until it is re-registered and remains on UK plates it will need to be legal and have a valid MoT assuming it is of an age that requires an MoT.

Lyric, the OP has previously posted that they are relocating to Cordoba so clearly needs to re-register the car, hence my post!

Only one more point to add..............
Hopefully it will only take you a few weeks to get the car on to Spanish Plates............but it could take longer............mine took four months......
Get a Gestor who specialises in vehicle transfers.
When you're good to go, Export it from DVLA in UK...............

Firstly, Linea Directa do not insure UK plated vehicles, secondly, an ITV on a UK plated vehicle is worth diddly squat. Any non-Spanish plated vehicle must be legal in it's country of registration

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
The procedure............
UK car fully legal in UK.......with at least 6 months MOT and Tax and 90-180 days European cover plus breakdown cover.
Get Gestor to start ball rolling on Transfer..........Engineers report......headlights and rear light clusters if needed.
The above is only necessary if the car really is going to stay permanently over is Spain, you can use car up to six months in on year.

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
Hi all,
Sorry, i would have replied sooner but the usual 'you have a reply' emails aren't coming through. Whoops.
Background....I'm relocating to Cordoba for 1 year, maybe 2. I just called Linea Directa and you're right they dont insure UK plates. I was going to do an ITV on a UK plated car....seems I cant do that. I have 5 hours now to do an MOT before I set off tomorrow. Not going to happen
Looks like my best bet then is to drive over and bring it back before my 6 months is up and then maybe sell it in the UK.
But my most pressing question is who can I ask for insurance? I rang around esure, admiral, etc, they only do holiday cover for up to a month, and linea directa dont do UK plates.
Thanks for the super help folks.

Just re-read this - "There is no need to insure while you are road legal in the uk."
How can that work?

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
A cheeky but perhaps legal angle:
"you can use car up to six months in on year." Could I thus use it now to Dec 31st, and then jan 1st to June 31st (which is incidentally when we were thinking of coming back to the UK any way).

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
Me again, I just called the garage, my car is there for some work, but it's unlikely they can do an MOT today before I leave. MOT runs out in September.
Referring back to one of the answers....would an ITV on a UK plated car make it legal or they just dont do them?

You will need European cover should not be a problem getting 90 days, I think LV would do 180 days.
You're too young for Saga..they do unlimited............
Need MOT otherwise you will not be Legal............reschedule Ferry........
The six months in one year ..... would work..........

Thanks enrique.
Just to clarify, I can't do an ITV in Spain instead of a MOT in the UK if I'm staying on UK plates?

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
Correct.
A MOT is for UK registered cars.
An ITV is for Spanish registered cars.
They are not interchangeable.

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
OK thanks so the only reason to do an ITV on a UK plated car is if I planned to register onto Spanish plates shortly after.
I see I have two options:
1) Cancel tomorrow's Eurotunnel, get a UK MOT booked in, drive over, use LV's (thanks for that) 180 day foreign use cover, come back around day 175, get a new foreign use cover, drive back over again, and leave before the first 6 months of 2014 are up
2) Go ahead tomorrow, book an ITV in as soon as I arrive, and get the registration ball rolling asap and then hope the registration comes into effect before my UK MOT runs out. I guess if there's a gap of a week or so I can just leave the car parked up at home?

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
Looking at expenses:
Eurotunnel ticket loss = £90 + £30 uk MOT = £120 (plus anything needed doing for MOT) + lost holiday with my family (£1 or priceless hehehe)
vs
How much for ITV and Spanish plate registration (and gestur)?

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
OK, if you get your car onto Spanish plates, at a cost of several hundred Euros, depends on value of car, emissions rating etc. and are only staying in Spain for 1 or 2 years what are you going to do with the car then?
Re import it into the the UK and get it back onto UK plates?
Could be easier/ cheaper to buy a Spanish registered car here in Spain.
Cheers

Re: Insurance company options and ITV question
Unless it's a particularly obscure/unusual vehicle, re-registering it onto spanish plates should be done within a week. If you choose this route it would be beneficial to obtain a C of C (Certificate of Conformity) from the manufacturer (cost anywhere between £40-£150 depending on manufacturer) which should negate any need for an expensive engineers report to show the vehicle complies with EU spec.

As you're a bit behind with your "homework"............Get UK car legal and good to go, then when over here get quote from Gestor and make a decision on which way to go, meanwhile the OH will have got a feel of the job and maybe a nine month contract is all she can stand...........
