The fine in question is my first in 30 years of driving. I've never even had a parking ticket. My wife was also fined a month ago. What's going on? Is it just the easy income for DGT/GC provided by a largely automated system?

Superplonk: it is just a question of being 'your time'!
If there was a GPS monitor in every car recording everyone's driving, even the most saintly little old lady would probably be doing something illegal for half their time.
Think yourself lucky you have got away with it for this long, and hope your luck changes!
