Car theft

Postby elizabennett » Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:29 am

I recently read this article in El Mundo:
"Una banda que robaba coches de lujo en Málaga contrataba mecánicos para desguazarlos por 500 euros
"A gang who stole luxury cars in Malaga hired mechanics to take them apart ..."
https://www.elmundo.es/espana/2021/07/0 ... b462e.html
The police caught this gang, but how many more are there? And they seem to have a "sophisticated" system. I guess if they are able to take cars like this apart, they can also disable even the most complicated alarm systems.
I am concerned about it as we are taking our car to Marbella in September. The parking at our apartment building is surface level, with no security gates. Any tips for protecting a car from theft?

Years ago the better-off Spanish had two cars - the prestige one that only came out from its secure garage on fiestas, and a slightly battered basic one for day-to-day use. I certainly would not want a prestige car (if that is what you have) parked out, especially in a target area like Marbella. Just make sure you have a steering wheel lock and a good alarm., and keep the keys in a Faraday bag. At least here the scrotes don't seem to have caught on to the catalytic converter theft!

There's an opel corsa, old model, import plates in front of mercadona in churriana... the exhaust is hanging down where the cat has been cut off.

Are you from Shrewsbury Road ? I think you are over thinking the whole situation. Is your car a Maserati or an AMG Mercedes ? Just enjoy the journey and lock the car when you leave it. Many people don't have their car interfered with in Marbella and there are lots of "supercars" etc for the specialist criminals to ship to Eastern Europe and Dubai.

If it is an old one the middle box has probably rusted and dropped off!

Marbella is is no worse than anywhere else. Don't believe Facebook. Lock the car, make sure the insurance is.up.to date, and don't leave valuables on show. Life is too short to worry.
