Car Tax

Postby alexander1 » Fri Apr 22, 2022 3:37 pm

I find this rather embarrassing to ask. However.... needs must. We have not been in Spain since 2020 and I don't know if our car is taxed or when it is/was due. It is insured. It will not have had an ITV either but our local garage usually does it for us and will do so again when we get there. Can anyone tell me where to look online? I have checked our DD's but cannot find anything. Any help appreciated.

Hi alexander1,

Have a look on your Province Web site for the above info...........

What happened last year (2021)............do you have a DD setup and was it paid last year :?:

If you have a Digital Signature you should be able to go online and View/pay your outstanding Bills IBI and Car tax. This is available on our Jaén site.

Looking at a Previous years car Tax window. for normal fee.......1 Apr 2021 to 6 Sep 2021

Missing ITV will get you a modest fine...........when you get a new one.

Many thanks both. Enrique are you saying although we have not been in Spain for two years we will be fined for not having an up to date ITV? The car has been garaged since May 2020. Every bill is paid by DD but it's just I don't see anything on our bank statements for car tax.

Hi alexander1,

When you take car for ITV and get a new one they will see when it last expired and levee a fine, ours was €4 for ten months late.

If you don't see any DD's for Car Tax then they are not set up.............. :?:

Enrique: I managed to get a step by step instruction on how to find it on the Malaga Portal. It would appear we are up to date and it is due in May. How.... I don't know :-)

Car tax is charged on January 1st to the owner of the vehicle. Most councils don’t issue demands until much later in the year.

If you sell the vehicle on January 2nd you are still liable for the whole year.

As above, the 'fine' for a late itv is a few euros, payable with the next itv fee. It's not worth worrying about.

Don't use the car unless it's going to the mechanic (with appointment) or to the itv (with appointment)

Otherwise you'll be fined 500€ for driving it should the guardia stop you.

Thanks spanish_lad.........I might try the site where I can pay it. Failing that the garage we go to usually takes it for us to ITV, so I may ask them to pay it at the same time.

the late "fine" is not payable seperatly - its just added to the cost of the ITV when you pay it next time the car goes for ITV. it HAS to be paid at the same time.

I was hoping that would be the case spanish_lad but when I asked the garage that is going to take it for its ITV he said that wasn't the case. However, now the car will be ready for its ITV .....the long queues at the airports have caused us delayi our trip until things settle down a bit. Thank you all for your advice. Much appreciated.

Hi pensure1988,
It it not on the Form you can print off........... :?:

Information from Jaén...........

Period voluntario 01/04/2022 al 06/06/2022
Pago fuera de plazo 07/06/2022 al 17/06/2022

They have a new site and no longer require Digital Signature

There are Favoured Banks and you can also pay by Card

I would have thought your area site would have a similar system............. :?:

Apologies Alexander, the two issues were getting confused in the conversation.

The ITV and its corrosponding late fee is paid the next time that the car goes for ITV.

The Car TAX (tasa de circulation) is paid at the town hall "recaudaccion" office and nobody can really do that for you (maybe a gestor can?) but theres no need. The tax on my megane used to be 50€ a year, and if i ever didnt pay it on time the fine that they charged was about 3 euros.

€50 a year, is this current? as your post says used to be.
Also what is the annual tax for the average car, are larger cars taxed like engine size/ommisions.

It varies quite a bit between towns I understand as it's a local town hall tax. When we had cars with bigger (diesel) engines 1.8L and 2.2L, we used to pay 93€. We now have 1.2 and 1.4L petrol cars and we pay 39€ each (recently reduced from 43€). The 93€ we used to pay never altered from when we moved here in 2000 to when we sold the diesel car 3 years ago.

Seems to depend on engine size. Ours is a 1.2 and we pay around 40. Hardly changed in 8 years
