Tests for the over 70s

For example: We are over 70; (We renewed our licences 2 years ago); do we need to take a test immediately?
Is it the same test as when we renewed our licences?
Perhaps we get a certificate to carry on the car?
Any info appreciated.

I believe it is just the same test you took to renew your licence.
They now seem to have reduced the requirement for it from 70 years to 65 years old.

We aren't due to renew until 2025,which is 5 years later.Usually we test every 5 years when we renew; however,I thought the new rule was "test-after-2 years".( which in our case would have been last year).

If you are 70 or over, next time you renew your licence it will only be for 2 years.

It's every three years in the UK if you are over 70 I believe

And even then, you don’t even have to have an eye test! What a joke - the only country where blind people can get a driving licence renewed!

I agreee 100%( speaking as a 75 year old!) with Spanish Lad.

By the way Sid; we've always had eye-tests when we renew our licences.......along with the "Steering 2-cars-around- dotted lines" game

So does the test come at a cost? I noticed on the link that the test has to be taken every 10yrs between the age of 18 and 65..

Yes, you have to pay for the test.
usually around the €40 mark.
Not a lot once every 10 years or every 2 years for us oldies.

42 ... no, I wish my mum was forced to give up her licence. I saw her deterioting over time, and her driving got worse and worse. She refused to give up tho.

I see old people driving into work every day, and at the airport etc, and sometimes the way they drive and the things they do scare me.

We all know reactions slow with age, however not all old drivers are rubbish. With experience gained over years, common sense things like keeping a sensible distance from car in front , anticipating what other idiots are doing especially those in cars that weren’t even made with indicators.


Airport driving? There are nutcases that zoom around presumably time is money, they know the area intimately ( might even work there!) Then there are holiday makers , some never been to Malaga before and might even be used to driving on the other side. Maybe there is a case for a blanket 20 kmh speed limit within 5km of the airport.

Even though I'm 75 ( so a qualified "oldie").
Before I retired I drove,through my job, all over Britain; averaging 50,000 miles per year.
In my experience there are two "driving-manaces":
1) idiots who drive too fast & dangerously
2) Old people who dodder about without a clue on the road.
I was never,personally,in the 1st catagory.
I just hope I have the decency to stop before I get to the 2nd.
There could be a case for Olive's airport/ speed restrictions though,I reckon.

I totally agree, but surely the test would be there to diferenciate - if you pass the test with flying colours you have nothing to worry about.

I've soooo many accidents in my 15 years working there it's mad. Hire car drivers flipping cars on their roofs because they are racing, an older couple in a coma because they were hit from behind by a speeding hire car.. just today there was a car stopped on the main roundabout in front of niza cars, just sitting there for 5 minutes getting beeped at and he just stayed there, yes, he looked older.
