Sounds like a Devil´s Coachman ( or Devil´s Coachhorse ) to me! Try googling them.

nope it was neither of those.

it looked pretty much like a cricket or chicada, but had some like ... curved ... "hands" on the front...

no pic, i´ve thrown it out in the garden

Its not a ickle earwig is it?!

I had a few after I brought some plants home. They must have crawled in from the terrace whilst I was busy ironing!

Mole cricket perhaps - try googling. I can't get a link to work on here. They sure are ugly critters and their 'song' is like a cricket under water!

We saw loads of them when digging out footings for BBQ but apparently they are an endangered species here in England.....

From the description, it sure does sound like a mole cricket.

Mole crickets are great..

You know they actually act like a mole and hunt down worms to eat? if you look at the front digging claws they are perfectly developed and if you put one on open soil and look away for a second and then back again it will be gone.....

They don't bite, are not poisonous and are completely harmless to people...

if you are a worm then they will eat you alive from the tail up after they have tracked you through your tunnel..
