PP your birds must be griffon vultures.... They look different depending on the sky brightness and distance... Also young and older birds have a different appearance....

The whole bird looks brown or black(difficult to tell when they are so high)with white bands,i think..or maybe they are half brown black with whiteish bands.....I havent got a clue what colour their feet are, they are too high!
Peachy, do they look like this ? If not, have a look at some of the other birds in Stephen's Gallery & see if you can spot it :D

wow Chrissie,he has some great bird pics and some fantastic other pics doesnt he!
I have had a good look at them and i think it could possibly be booted eagles..I see them quite regularly flying above,so im going to get a better look at them next time.
I have seen that many pics of birds,i cant remember what colour the bands were on the wings.. i was sure they were black, but after trailing thru all the pics, now im not so sure.

Has anybody any idea what this bird may be:

I only here it very early in the morning when it is still dark, around 5.30am. It has a beautiful song, very diverse in it's shrills and tweets, it almost sounds like it is talking in bird language. It "talks" for about 10 minutes, then I don't hear it again. This is the only info I have.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Have a look and listen to the wren at

Or try this nightingale...

Thanks for that wildside. It sounds very much like the Nightingale. I have only noticed it the last month or so. A pleasure to listen to even at that time in the morning. :D

Just an update (I can't seem to quote from the first page where my original comment was !).

I ordered Birds of Iberia (as recommended by ken2 :D ) on Thursday, it arrived yesterday while we were in North Wales - it had been sent from Rhyl, just up the road from where we were   !

Very impressed with the speed & service - I won't post on here in case I get my wrists slapped, but if anyone's interested in the name of the company I used, feel free to pm me.

Lovely book, and I'm looking forward to using it when we are next in Spain (just over 5 weeks & counting ! )

We have stayed many times close to where wildside lives, and as lovely as the nightingale is, when it goes all night, it gets a bit boring! :D We stayed a few times outside Alora, and they used to start there at midnight, and we reckoned the owners had a recording that was timed to start at midnight!

There is one here every year, somewhere in the trees outside the garden, trills all night. I often stand on the terrace listening to it before I turn in. Someone said it could be a night jar :? I like to listen to the owl too.

Where we stay outside Ronda there are often birders staying there, and they seem to head to Sierra de Las Nieves in the evenings to see if they can get a glimpse of a nightjar. We have seen them, like sherpas, with loads of gear, heading off as we are heading out for a meal and a drink! Next day, at breakfast, "did you see any?" "Nope, not a thing!"
