5 dogs and one cat going to UK....

Postby tjtops » Thu Feb 17, 2011 2:21 pm

Has anyone any advice/suggestions on the best/cheapest/most cost effective way to do the above? (BTW ferry from Spain ISN'T an option.....I get dreadfully seasick!!! )
Current plan is drive to Calais, which is somewhat daunting to say the least! Some people seem to say that air fares aren't THAT expensive..... but....
All suggestions welcome (I will be doing this myself!)

erm.....

The channel tunnel (last time i checked) charged €46 per animal to cross. that is €276 by my reckoning. Then there is Fuel to get up there and the cost of a one way crossing with the channel tunnel.

Can you get them all in your vehicle?

From the sound of it, driving will be your only option. I would always avoid transporting my animals via air, road is always best for me.

Perhaps try and avoid as many tolls as possible. If you look at http://www.mappy.com you can get a route with or without tolls.

You may also have to take someone with you as there is a 5 pet limit per person to enter the UK according to DEFRA. http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/p ... /index.htm

You will find that the air fair is very expensive and you will also need to buy a crate for each animal.

The cheapest way is by road, but make certain that you plan ahead regarding vet inspections and treatments.

Look on the DEFRA website where you will see a list of approved carriers and UK airports which accept pet passport animals and call them.

Also look in search as is a frequent topic but dont get distracted by someone who always says they paid 45 quid as excess luggage. Whether they did or they didnt, they were talking about years ago when they flew UK to Spain not the other way where the price is obviously fixed between the airlines.

However AFAIK the cost for flying from Spain to the UK will be in the region of £450 EACH

The drive isn't as bad as it seems. We had to get back last year to the UK during the Volcanic ash debarcle and made the drive with just one overnight stop in France. This was with 3 kids under 6. The drive in Spain was very easy with quiet roads - a bit slower in France.

Do check the relevant web sites - the Eurotunnel one says a total of five animals per vehicle ....

"The eurotunnel says a total of 5 animals per vehicle"

If this is the case then possibly the ferry across the channel?

Don't worry, the Eurotunnel site clearly states 5 animals per person, not per vehicle.
"Only 5 pets per person are permitted to travel to and from France."

Perhaps an alternate route to cross the channel is advisable.....?

Hi tjtops,
While there is plenty of time before travelling some checks................read through the Compliance Checklist.................

http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/pet-f ... -checklist

Then go through each of your Pets Passports to see if all is in order.
Any alterations must have a vets signature and stamp.

Then get someone else to go through and check again. :!: :!:

Some planning next............there is a window of 24 -48 hrs for the tick, flea and worm treatment so your embarkation at your chosen port will need to be timed.

When you go to the vets for the above treatment make sure the microchips are read/readable, and correspond to the correct Passport.
If you initially got all the Passports at the same time I would pop down to the vets now and check that they correspond to correct passport.
Some Vets seem to be bad on paper work.

So no stress then................ :D
