Home Made Dog Food
Home Made Dog Food
Does anyone make their own dog food? I am thinking about it as I don't like the smell or contents of the supermarket brands and the better brands are a bit costly. I'm thinking of minced meat and rice? Does anyone have a dog food "recipe". Also is there anything in the butchers I can ask for which is good for dogs?

Have you thought about BARF diet? Good quantity of meaty bones available in butchers eg chicken carcases. Is pretty cheap, and our dogs love it.

Re: Home Made Dog Food
Mince meat and rice wouldn't be a natural or complete diet for dogs, think of what a dog would eat in the wild. The raw meaty bones diet was all the rage in England in the 80s, I think that an Australian vet wrote a book about it, a lot of us tried it and it was fun for a while, it became harder to keep going with the necessary minerals and vitamins to be added. I would suggest a middle of the road price wise complete dry food from the supermarket, fed once a day for 5 days, day 6,raw meaty bones ( remember never cooked chicken bones as they become very brittle and the splinters can lodge in the gut and kill the dog, that also applies to the drying out if left in the sun),day 7 a rest day from eating. If you thing that the dry food is a bit boring for the dog you can put a spoonfull from your own plate to mix in. Feed a quarter less than the packet says, they always suggest to much ( if after a month the dog is looking a bit under weight you can always up the amount). I would try to stay clear of tinned food as it's an expensive way to feed water, most cans are 80% water.

Thats great thanks for the advice. I just thought burger mince from the supermarket and rice as this appears to be the ingredients in the shop bought dried food (plus by-products of animals). I have been frying onion, garlic and a handful of frozen mixed veg and adding this to the fried mince and cooked rice. I admit its not what she'd eat if she was in the wild but then again neither is dried supermarket bagged food. We've been living here for two months and she seemed to be looking a bit lack lustre on the shop bought food but she has her shine back since i've become her "chef". Someone mentioned biscuits but I can't find just plain dog mixer type biscuits like back in the uk. She loves to finish off the children's leftovers so she gets a bit of variety. But I will try buying the chicken carcasses and giving them raw a couple of times a week I think she might like that! I'll let you know. Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.

My Mum used to make dog biscuits- using stale wholemeal bread- she would cut it into cubes ansd slow bake it in the oven until dry and crispy- it wasn´t just the dogs who liked the ´biscuits´
Re: Home Made Dog Food
Please don't give dogs onions. It can cause hemolytic anaemia. Worse for cats but can affect dogs too and can be days before you see any ill effects.

Great idea to make home made dog food - providing it is done right, your dog will thrive!
I would suggest seeking advice on this subject from those experienced and knowledgeable in this area - I would recommend asking for the same advice on some of the highly regarded dog forums.
As already mentioned by 'Crazyred' but so important it needs to be said again - DO NOT GIVE A DOG ONIONS!!! Onions Are Very Toxic To Your Dog
Tread carefully where Garlic is concerned too, but in moderation Garlic is safe for your dog
I bet you & your dog are glad you started this thread and mentioned onions!
All the best with your quest in finding a healthier food for your pet

Wow, i did not know about onions, and shes been having leftover lasagne for years with onions. I will be careful from now on, thanks. I like the biscuits idea will try making some this weekend as I always have flour in the cupboard going to waste. I will look for more information online about what to make, I've been ill for the past few days and have reverted back to frolic with some man food mixed in and she hasn't complained too much. Again great advice thanks!
