Telling the sex of a cat

Postby Mowser » Thu Feb 14, 2013 11:48 am

I haven't a clue. I've been on the internet where it tells you the difference is in the space between the back passage and the naughty bits. We have acquired a cat visitor who lives on our terrace. I've poked and prodded and examined but I'm no further forward. Many scratches later, I've now come here for help.

Is there a simple way to tell if "our" cat is male or female. If it's a female I'll take it to the vets to get "done."

I don't have a clue either, but if you plan to take a female to the vets, why not take the cat anyway and let the vet decide the sex :D

That is also in our plans. The trouble is he / she is a feisty wee bu66er. We have got a cat cage and the little so and so is happy to eat our food and be stroked. I'd need to invest in a pair of builder's gloves before I tackle him (her).

it's easy. Even as a very young kitten you should be able to see if it's got balls.

Unless it has already been neutered.

It is an extremely furry cat. It's hard to see anything let alone balls.

Try and watch it when it's having a pee.
If it lifts it's tail and points it's backside at a wall and sprays then it is a male who is scent marking his territory.
females usually squat to pee.

Makes no difference - you can still see the sac. I have 4 neutered cats and it's quite obvious. You don't neuter until they are well developed at about 6 months.

Most cats here who have been neutered have had a nick cut out of their ear. This one has ears intact.
Gerry ... nice way to spend a day - watching a cat pee! So far all he / she has done is take a dump on a neighbour's terrace.

Gerry, I've had MANY male cats and not one has ever peed how you describe, lol!!

If you hold the cat in front of you and lift it's tail, female should have 2 holes fairly close together, males will have the appearance of 3 holes (unless the balls have formed and then it will be quite obvious and between the 2 holes) or if very young, 2 holes widely spaced. How old is the kitty? I usually neuter between 8-12 mths but have just had a 6mth old female come into season who is driving me mental with her squawking, yet her sister is showing no sign whatsoever

I have no idea how old the cat is. It doesn't look like a stray so it may have been dumped by someone going back to the UK. The cat is also quite timid - except when I rummage about in its nether regions!

Then again it could simply be a house cat who likes spending some time on our terrace. My concern is that I'll suddenly find myself with a whole family of cats on our terrace.

That usually only applies to stray/ feral cats.
We now have 6 cats. All acquired as abandoned kittens.
All have been neutered except for one who is now old enough and is being done next Wednesday.
None have had a nick cut in their ears.

If it sits in front of the telly it's a male.
If it hangs about the kitchen it's a female

Our cat loves watching football on TV. She's not male
Mind you, she also likes to hang around the kitchen - especially if someone is peeling prawns!
Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often
