What is the cost of treatment for a dog with Leish?

We have a mastin cross dog at the refuge that more than likely has Leish, he has blood pouring from his nose, not all the time, but daily bleeds. Yesterday a vet managed to get a blood sample to send off , not an easy task from a dog that did not want a test! We should get the results by Thursday. The vet is certain it is Leish, the test on the little handheld thing said positive. Any idea of what sort of costs the refuge will be looking at for treatment? Also, how long can a dog survive with Leish? I guess that depends on the dog concerned though.

we took a med size dog into the vet for a Leish test which is positive just a month ago. We were advised to get him feeling better and to reduce the levels of the Leish, he needed a month of aggressive treatment which ranged from between €70-€200 dependant on which option you took (injection, oral liquid or tablets) and brand then it would be €4 a month for his size for the normal tablets after that for the rest of his life.

A dog can live on a long life with Leish if it is not ridiculously advanced already but he should wear a Scalibor collar as he can keep catching it again and again.

Thanks Donz. Hope your dog is ok. The first months treatment is going to be the ´killer´ after that it won´t be so bad, 4€ is nothing. Is it possible to buy Scalibor collars on line and cheaper?

We get our Scalibor collars in the UK for £9 and change, we have them delivered to a friend in the UK who brings them out (saves extortionate postage as free in UK)

Thanks for the replies, I have passed the information on to the refuge members. It seems the level of Leish is extremely high, they are speaking to the vet tonight. The vet had said he was very ill. He has some medication already, I don´t know what that is. We are going to have to check the other dogs now. The problems never end do they?
