Info needed for bringing my dog to Spain

Postby Jenny1960 » Tue Jun 04, 2013 3:39 pm

Good afternoon everyone,

We will be driving over there on June 12th with our dog for aprrox 6-8 weeks and I've heard that you need special paperwork (apart from pet passport etc) for my dog.
I'm aware that he needs to be muzzled at all times as he is classed as a dangerous dog (Doberman) and I also need insurance?
I've been in touch with my insurance company but they are unaware of a third party insurance in case he bit somebody (which is very unlikely). Can anybody enlighten me please on what else I may need to know?

Many thanks in advance

Jenny

Bringing it to Spain is not really a problem. You can purchase 3rd party public liability insurance in Spain, against him eating someone easily. Most house policies have cover up to about 300k euros. But that might only cover the premises & grounds of the property. You'd probably be able to ask/get P/liability insurance at alocal vets.
I don't know how it would work with a foreign dog on his holidays but when out with a spanish dog, like everything in Spain, you are expected to be carrying all the paperwork for him. Here the " Certificate of vaccinations/health" book also comes with a plastic card that you can carry easily listing name, owners name, address, type, chip number etc.In addition if it is registered here as a dangerous dog, then you'd also have your certificate of phsycological aptitude/licence & insurance with you.
You'd only need to be in possession of his booklet & able to prove that you are on holiday.

Thank you very much Gus-Lopez for your reply. When I get there, I will take him to the Vets near me and ask about any extra paperwork for a dog on holiday. (I may even ask my Lawyer come to think of it as she lives in the same apartment block as us). I did not realise you had to carry all the paperwork with you when out with dogs in Spain so I will keep that in mind too just ~ in case!

You've been very helpful ~ thank you

Jenny

Thank you also Enrique ~ I've just seen your reply.
So all I need is to carry his blue passport? thats good, thats what I needed to know thanks!

I just want to mention Jenny that there is a disease her called Leishmaniasis which is passed on by a sand fly (although they do look like mosquitoes) so you should get a collar to protect you dog against that. Some people I know have brought there dogs to Spain not knowing about this disease and have gone home and found there dog has unfortunately been affected. A lot of Spanish dogs have it :(

Hi

I am bringing our Jack Russell to Spain for a holiday! He has his passport and microchip. He was last injected for rabies June 2013 and is not due again until June 2015. Does he have to be given a booster regardless that it is not due until 2015?

And am I right, that he only needs the tapeworm treatment when going back to the UK?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi laudan,

UK and Spain don't read from the same page.........Rabies 3 years UK ,1 year Spain

As you're only visiting.........the Valid until date is good.
You need a Vet to give worming treatment before going back to UK, you now have a five day window, so need to get to UK or the Ferry Boat in that time scale.

For reference if applicable to anyone on the site. At the annual injections for my dog on the 21st Feb 2014 the brand of Rabies injection her vet uses is now valid for 3 years. This is a Portuguese vet. I live over the border in Spain. The brand he uses also allows all the different injections he gives to be given in one syringe causing less stress to the dog. He gives the injection in the flesh at the back of the neck NOT in the rib area as some vets do. No way would they do that to mine.

From previous experience make sure the vet has all the valid dates on your dogs vaccinations. Had a bit of upset leaving UK to return to Spain some years ago, because then Spanish vet we had at the time did not put expiry date on the rabies entry.

Very valid points.......ValL,

Check every entry in your Pets Passport, any errors that have been corrected make sure they are countersigned by a vet with vets stamp.

Make sure the Chip and Rabies dates are in the right order.

"The date of microchipping MUST be shown as being on or before the date of initial vaccination against rabies. "

Futher reading.

http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/infor ... -checklist

You can get into Spain easy, going back the other way they check thoroughly, especially at Santander Port, I think the "checker" is in league with the local vet.......

When you go to the vet for return journey get the Microchip read to confirm its still ok.

Have a great holiday........our JR loved coming to Spain........ :D

Hi ElVochoClassico,
Welcome to The Forum............... :)

"I'm moving over in October with a dog so good to hear what I need to do"

The moving over is the easy bit, its getting the dog back to UK that can prove a challenge.

They check every entry in the Pets Passport and if its not 100% then you're sent off to the vets for a 35euro correction fee......
I had been travelling with my Pets Passports for some years........ then about two years ago I was sent twice on two different trips to the Vets.
Even this week I noticed people where coming back to have there updated paper work check having been to the Vets.....

Thanks for that, so what things should I make sure they have entered on the paperwork? I don't have plans to take him back to the UK but you never know - I may pop back for a month and if that was the case I would bring him so I do want to make sure I have everything spot on to save any hassle or upsets :)
