Dog ownership

Postby Manchesteral » Wed May 27, 2020 9:52 pm

Do you need a licence for a dog in Spain, what are the rules.
I am a long term dog owner of several breeds, sadly left behind when I moved here, my ex now has "custody" and she's doing, as always a fine job but I'm now thinking of taking a small dog here in Las Palmas, anyone clarify the rules for me, thanks Al !

The following is what I am aware of in Andalucia, might be different where you live.
Dog licences don't exist.
The dog must be microchipped.
It has to have a rabies jab and yearly booster jabs.
If it is regarded as a dangerous breed ten it must be muzzled when outside your property.
It must be on a lead when outside your property.
It must be kept under proper control at all times.
It has to have adequate food, water and shelter.
You must clean up the poo and pee when not on your property.
I'm sure there are other rules as well.
If you live on an urbanisation/ within a community then your community might have additional rules as might your local authority.
Cheers

Hi Manchesteral,

If you acquire the the dog from a Rescue then it will come with a EU Pets Passport with details of the Microchip , Rabies jabs and any OPs.

There maybe other local requirements like registering the Dog with the local Town Hall (requirement for Alcalá la Real )

Have a chat with your Local Vet.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Vail
Those restrictions only apply to owning "potentially dangerous dogs"
Most pet dogs are not in that category.

'Potentially dangerous' in spain also means 'over 20kg' even if your big soppy labrador is not on the list, if its 20kg or more then its treated the same.

Most vets will put dogs down as 'cruce' (cross-breed) to avoid most of the 'dangerous dog' rules... A stupid idea in alot of cases...
