Speeding fines and UK licence
Friend (who moved here 4 months ago) got a speeding fine today, paid straight away as his licence is still a UK one, he was planning to get it changed next week, or start the process! Does anything else happen? It was a 100kmph road, and he didnt see any sign for a 60 km bit as he passed a fuel station. He was driving my car, which is Spanish plated. Any further fines etc due? There should be 2 penalty points too. Do they get put onto a UK licence? He always keeps to speed limit (except today!) never parks, or abandons the car (or park it as the Spanish call it) where it shouldn't!! He doesnt object to paying the fine, as he was speeding, he is furious he didn't notice the 60 sign ( if there was one).
Would have been far easier if it had been a Spanish licence!

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
Hi, The good news is that points can not be added or deducted (depending on system) anywhere in the EU unless the offence occurs in the country of issue. There are ongoing attempts to change this.
Also you do not automatically have points deducted here for certain speeding offences. I have been caught twice at in excess of 100km on A92, never noticed the sign! The fine came in the post and it clearly stated that if I paid up quickly that would be the end of it. No points.
Possibly you have to be really dangerous before there are issues with points.

you do automatically get points, but depending on what the limit is and what speed you were caught at
for example doing 100km/h in a limit of 60km/h has automatic 2 points and 300 fine
but doing 100 in a limit of 70 has no points, just a fine.

The fines and points system was rationalised on 7/3/2011. The fines and points deducted, if applicable, can be seen at:

That link is out of date as it applied after the limit was dropped to 110kph.
That limit was rescinded so the old table now applies again.

It's the link info currently displayed on the DGT web site. Maybe they are jusr slow.

I can't say I am surprised! They are probably still fining people for exceeding 110kph!Campo Steve wrote:It's the link info currently displayed on the DGT web site. Maybe they are jusr slow.
If you look at the title it says:-
Cuadro para excesos de velocidad desde 07/03/2011 (RD 303/2011, de 4 de marzo)
That was the date they imposed the now deceased 110KPH limit.

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
So what happens if you paid the fine and then later changed your licence to a Spanish one as you must. Do the points that came with the fine get added to your new Spanish licence? If you waited two years before getting your Spanish licence do the points then "expire" and not get put onto your new licence.?
All hypothetical of course.

I doubt that Trafico have a system that would pick up on the fact that you had an offence in Spain.
You really won't know until you do the exchange.
It's only 2 points so you still have quite a few to lose!

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
On current form your points could have expired by the time Trafico issue you with your Spanish licence. I have just had an email telling me to come and get mine - just over 4 months after applying...I wonder if all my groups will be correct, along with everything else?

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
For medical reasons my licence renewal was only for 3 years. Paid 3/5 of the fee and they sent me a 5 year licence.
It's like my last ITV - the car is over 10 years old but they gave me a 2 year sticker and stamped the Ficha Technica with a 2 year next test date!

That level of official competence goes a long way to explain why Spain was only a G-33 country and now only gets a side-row seat as part of the EU at G-20 conferences - a long way from G-7,!

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
I exchanged mine earlier this year. When I collected it, it only covered Groups B and Be. The UK licence I exchanged included those as well as C1, C1e, D1, D1e and f,k,l,n,p. I asked why the difference and they said "because your medical cetificate only covered B and Be". That was news to me as the medical centre had looked at the UK licence and the groups it covered....I wonder if all my groups will be correct, along with everything else?
To be honest I couldn't be asked to pursue the matter further because I doubt I will need to drive a van, van plus trailer, minibus and minibus plus trailer. I have no idea what the f,k,l,n,p stood for as they don't even appear on the list on the Spanish licence.

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
Enrique, thanks for that. Some bizarre classes according to the list. I don't think I'll be riding a moped, driving a motor mower (presumably on the Highway?) or agricultural tractor or electrical vehicle (shades of Ernie the fastest milkman there) or a vehicle that travels at no more than 6 miles per week between pieces of land!
I guess I'm happy with just the two classes given on the Spanish licence!

Re: Speeding fines and UK licence
I know this has been asked before ... whats the situaton about HAVING to change you licence to a Spanish one ?
I know its something to do with UK or EU design ... mine has the EU ring of yellow stars on a blue back ground with the letters GB in the center. Is this legal in spain ?
