5 year gas certificate renewal

There is much discussion both past and present on this and other forums about whether it is legally necessary to have your gas certificate renewed every 5 years. Does anyone have the definitive answer to this? I dont mean anecdotal evidence or what various self-interested parties may say but the actual legal requirement if any? (Obviously the dated tubes etc can be purchased and replaced by oneself.)

It's covered by Real Decreto 919/2006
Articulo 4-2 ITC-ICG 07 del Reglamento.

Every five years.

Ask your gas bottle delivery man as he will provide a certificate at a reasonable cost.

There are a few rip of companies and possibly fraudesters about, overcharging.

I understand if repsol come to inspect they make an appointment with you.

Thanks for the swift response. I would prefer it if you were flattered rather than miffed! There has been this discussion on a number of forums but I couldn't seem to get a definitive answer. Thanks to you, I now have one. I think that A.com is a superior place for getting legal solutions as there is considerable expertise here and a specific section for such queries. As you are no doubt aware on another forum we seemed to be going round in circles on this issue. So thanks again.

boblocksmith, I reckon that the forum we are referring to has so much crud posted on it, that it is difficult to see the facts amongst the fiction.
On here, it is pretty self regulating, there are some very knowledgeable posters, and they soon put right any myths and falsehoods which might get posted.

A mention would have been nice, but I suspect it would have been deleted.

They certify your installation as being safe, after inspection by a tecnico.

There is some suggestion that if there were a fire or explosion in a house with gas, that the first thing the insurers would want to see is the gas contract or renewal. It is a legal requirement.

As I have previously mentioned there has been loads of discussion on this issue on this forum sometimes centred around the 'bogus gas men'. My understanding is that any new or changed gas installation or a change of ownership will require a new certificate to be issued after a check by your gas supplier. Every 5 years a new certificate is required also - to confirm that your equipment is safe (thanks to Whitehorse for this confirmation). There are other gas firms who may do this check some genuine some maybe not, but many if not all are often rip off merchants who cold call and use high pressure to charge astronomical amounts. The genuine suppliers eg Repsol will never cold call. Best to reject any that do. You can contact Repsol etc and they will come out to check and issue the certificate. The tubes are all date coded with the date renewal is needed and can be purchased at any ferrateria at a low price as can the regulators (or Repsol etc can do this for you no doubt charging a lot more) . Although insurance companies may not write the requirement for a current gas certificate in your policy document, they are aware that it is a legal requirement in Spain and if there is a subsequent claim there could be a problem. The onus is on the individual to organise this although probably many people do not bother.

We didn't know we even had to have a Certificate (just 'inherited' the gas bottles etc from previous owner) until about a year ago, having owned our house for eight years. Found out on this forum.

Anyway, we asked our local bloke to do this certficte on the appliances while we are in the UK. He has done it and said the cooker had not been done since 1976! I don't know how that can be as we got a new cooker four years ago, but perhaps we used the old fitments, I can't remember.

Anyway it's all done now!

From previous experience I was advised that you require a 'Certificate' if you use any form of bottled gas in your residence.
And the supply hose and connectors / regulators need to be 'up to date'.

Ask your official gas supplier for information/ issue of certificate.

Not meant to be a daft question but who is my official gas supplier?
When I need a new bottle of gas I drive down to my local Cepsa garage and get a new bottle.

WE used the guy in the village who is an official gas and central heating engineer, the equivalent of CORGI, I suppose. He does everyone's in the village (although he does not sell gas bottles).

Gerry...Your official supplier would be the company that you have a gas supply contract with, if you don't have a contract then officially you don't have an 'official' supplier...
To be correct you would have paid a deposit/fee for the bottles and supply.
For 12 years I just swopped bottles, (which I bought at the local carboot), at our local petrol station or the ferreteria or the local greengrocer who had a 'shed out the back'..highly illegal,I'm sure and I never had an 'official' contract.
Now I'm 'All Electric'..No gas ..No bottles..No Black Fungus growing on our walls and as an asthmatic my breathing is better !

As you appear to support that forum, perhaps you can tell us if there is anything new we have not already covered.
