In Spain the term "reputable lawyer" is a misnomer, from what I can gather there is no such animal

'Reputable lawyer'. Perfect example of an oxymoron.

I thought the penny may have dropped when the OP noticed the lack of response!
My advice? Buy nothing in Spain, just rent, or if you are locked into the British 'own the home' mantra, wait until the Spanish sort out the horrendous mess that is property here - the legality, the registration, the frequent charging for someone else's land, the lawyers being either incompetent or crooked, the mayors fight with the junta for authority...
You coukd have a long wait!
