My accountant is submitting my Renta for me and as now emailed me to say that the Tax Office wants to know the NI/Passport numbers of my tenants in the UK house that I am renting out. I have explained to them that this is not normally supplied by Tenants, but they are insisting that they can't submit the tax return without this info. I don't feel comfortable asking my tenants for this information. I have explained that it is probably breaking the UK Data Protection Act, but still they want it.
Anyone had similar problems and how did they get round it ?

I haven't come across this personally, but looking at the relevant section in the declaration where tenant's NIFs are required, it says that if it's not a Spanish NIF then you just put an X in the box.

Thanks, that helps. I have emailed the accountant and said just to put a 'No Hay' in the relevant box, as suggested.

this is correct .if you provide the name and passport number which in my view is better than having an issue with the tax people here, you should get a very nice tax discount on your rental tax base,it took our rental income down from 6500 approx to 2500 approx meaning we had no tax to pay on a joint declaration of around 11k wich we were more than happy with.gerrynag wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 1:18 pm My accountant is submitting my Renta for me and as now emailed me to say that the Tax Office wants to know the NI/Passport numbers of my tenants in the UK house that I am renting out. the form asked for
the property address
the tenancy start date
the tenants name
the tenants id number ,we used the passport number which was accepted
Re: Request by Tax Office for info on UK Tenants
As I said I didn't feel comfortable asking tenant for Passport number or NI number, (which in case they have no obligation to supply). Tax office appeared to have accepted having a blank in that box.
